"Quick Search" Back On Sex Listings, But...
 

Now that CFS is running a secure 'https' connection I can bring back the 'Quick Search' that lets you find cruisy places close to you.

All you have to do for 'Quick Search' is select how miles from your location you want to search, then click 'Search Now!'

The other Search box where you can type in the name of a place, a town, or whatever is still there of course.

For those who may be new to CFS, 'Quick Search' had stopped working abruptly some time ago due to upgrades on all the major web browsers.

Let me know if you have any problems with it. I'll be working with it in the next couple weeks and also try to bring the 'Quick Search' form back to the CFS Home Page.

Meanwhile, Google has also raised prices for using Google Maps, so much that it will be unaffordable for CFS to keep showing all the maps we do right now.

In the short term: I'm going to work on removing the Google Maps from the State, Metro, and City pages. Since you can search for places within a distance from you, that's probably a better option to find places nearby. This will reduce the cost of running CFS - I was really surprised by the size of the bill from Google! - and help keep us going.

In the long term: I checked the software upgrade package and it still incorporates Google Maps. Although I do intend to update our software, I'm also going to search for a less expensive alternative to Google Maps - Open Street Maps is one option that comes to mind.

Important Update August 23 2018: There was a server crash yesterday. No data was lost, but the Sex Listings pages had to be restored from a copy prior to upgrading the Google Maps. They aren't working on the Place pages and the Search pages.

I apologize for the problem -- especially for not having a more current backup! -- and will be working to fix it ASAP.

August 26: The missing maps have now been corrected, although the pages for Places now have a less expensive Google "Static Map." I've also removed the Maps from the State, Metro, and City pages again.

Funny the things as a website user you never think about - like Google Maps charging the website...

Especially when they take you by surprise and suddenly someone charges you $1000 with more bills coming. It won't be sustainable, really.

I also noticed that the search based on location seems to have been programmed (by the software developer, not by me!) to match up with the latitude and longitude of most US zip codes.

Although I programmed the script to obtain a CFS user's latitude and longitude, ultimately I'll have to dig into the program so that the Quick Search will work in other countries.

I'd also like to set it up so that we could type in some other city, look up the latitude and longitude, then show cruisy places there. That would help when planning trips.

Interesting that is uses latitude and longitude - makes sense - but never would have occurred to me. There is another website I am familiar with but when you put in the zip code it will often suggest something 20 miles away and not in the town next to me - would be interesting to know what their search works on.

A lot of sites use a 'geoip' database based on a zipcode. All the zipcodes are in a table along with the latitude and longitude. Usually they estimate your location based on your computer (or device's) IP address, then compare that with the zip code table's latitude/longitude combinations.

I used to live in a large zipcode where the center of it was miles away. Some of the sites actually didn't have my zipcode. They used my IP address to place me in Kansas (the center of the continental US?) instead of Texas. One placed me in New Jersey.

For CFS, I coded things to ask your browser for your latitude and longitude. Unfortunately, the 3rd-party back-end programming still relies on a 'geoip/zipcode' table. What this means is that our "Quick Search" doesn't work in most of the world and in some US zipcodes, too.

That bill for $1000 was about a charge from Google Map services to CFS a few years ago. That led to having to change the way maps display on the Sex Listings so that Google would charge less to CFS. It has nothing to do with charging CFS Members.

This is a free site. You are not charged to join. That's why there is no section for credit card info when you register.

The only source of income for CFS is advertising. This is a shoestring operation run by me, with occasional (and very welcome!) help from members and guests who send updates and corrections. I hope that anyone who enjoys CFS will patronize our advertisers regularly, since the links from the ads pay for keeping CFS staying online.

When and if I am able to upgrade the site's software and add better features, I've considered offering a paid premium membership that would remove as many ads as possible, provide a better mobile experience, and other things. Unfortunately I've had to keep postponing that for various personal reasons.
