Suggestions for a visitor

Hi guys, I'd appreciate any info you might offer for my vacation. I'll be flying into Phoenix, hanging there for a few days (where should I stay? What bars/bookstores/etc have sure-bet action?) after which I'll be driving to the Grand Canyon (hang there for a few days and then on to Vegas and leave from there. Any action at the Grand Canyon?
