Virgin to Arizona Apr 21-27 TIPS???

Hey men- going to be flying in to Phoenix on the 21st ( Tuesday) I have never been to any part of AZ, and at this point my sort of plan is to base camp in Phoenix for Tues and Wed, then head up to Sedona and Red Rocks on Thursday. I would like to find a Motel 6 type of motel in Phoenix close to the gay area, and similar up in Sedona- so the local tops can have easy access to my room and butt in each location for each night. After Sedona, I am not sure- north to the Canyon, or back down south to Tucson-- or??? Any input from you locals would be really great-- best sleze places in the state, best things to have to make a point of seeing in the state, super little hole in the wall restaurants the locals love and the tour busses miss, etc
