Hostels in San Francisco

I am coming alone to San Francisco at the end of July for the Dore Alley Street Fair.
Are there any hostels that are safe and fun? I passed one last year that is located off 9th Street @ Minna (just south of Market and not far from Folsom Street).
Anyone ever stay there?
