Oral Sex and Oral Cancer

Boy am I in trouble!

Oral sex linked to cancer risk
Feb 21, 2011

WASHINGTON - US SCIENTISTS said on Sunday there is strong evidence linking oral sex to cancer, and urged more study of how human papillomaviruses may be to blame for a rise in oral cancer among white men.

In the United States, oral cancer due to HPV infection is now more common than oral cancer from tobacco use, which remains the leading cause of such cancers in the rest of the world. Researchers have found a 225-per cent increase in oral cancer cases in the United States from 1974 to 2007, mainly among white men, said Maura Gillison of Ohio State University.

'When you compare people who have an oral infection or not... the single greatest factor is the number of partners on whom the person has performed oral sex,' said Ms Gillison, who has been researching HPV and cancer for 15 years.

'When the number of partners increases, the risk increases,' she told reporters at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Washington.

Previous studies have suggested that people who have performed oral sex on six or more partners over a lifetime face an eight-fold higher risk of acquiring HPV-related head or neck cancer than those with fewer than six partners, she said.

But even though the link between HPV and cervical cancer has been well known for many years, and vaccines now exist to provide some protection, much study remains to be done to confirm observational links and establish causes, Ms Gillison said. 'The rise in oral cancer in the US is predominantly among young white males and we do not know the answer as to why.'

I think this it total b.s. Maybe there was a 225-per cent increase in oral cancer cases in the United States from 1974 to 2007, mainly among white men because people are living longer, or dying less from other things--or any of many other factors. It could be more people doing chewing tobacco, who also happen to do oral sex. I suspect the tobacco industry funded this study to deflect attention away from dangerous oral products.

Notice that the article LATER limits this to HPV-related head or neck cancer (but being vague and never giving any numbers): "Previous studies have suggested that people who have performed oral sex on six or more partners over a lifetime face an eight-fold higher risk of acquiring HPV-related head or neck cancer than those with fewer than six partners . . . ."

Also, I suspect they included a lot of AIDS-infected people (who I suspect are a lot more likely to get cancer).

In this goofy country, don't be surprised if this study was also influenced by Religious elements who think that oral sex is wrong.

I think they probably run uni courses now entitled "how to lie statistically"

Who was it who said; "lies, damned lies and statistics"?

We are bombarded these days by news items beginning ".. and new research now shows that ......" Many of these "research studies" are just PR strategies where "researchers" start with the answer they want, and design questions to provide the answer.

A plague on all their houses !!

Could you please explain what kind of cancer you had/have, and why is it worth the risk?

Because life is for living. And living a full life is about some fair degree of risk. If you don't want the risk of sex, don't have sex. Take away the risk and you take away much of the thrill and pleasure from sex.

If oral sex were a primary mode of transmitting cancer, we'd not be just reading it now because oral sex is done my millions of folks constantly and yet cancer is still, thankfully, not that widespread.

Cancer: non-hodgkin's lymphoma. In remission for several years.
