In The News: A Sort-Of Competitor Has Controversial Billboards

There's some news about Squirt.org, which had been a sort of competing site to CFS for several years. They were founded in 1999. We were founded in 1995 as the online evolution of the former Steam Magazine listing cruisy sites, dirty stories, etc. For a few years we were in direct competition, but the online world changed.

Although Squirt.org now includes an online list of cruisy spots, they are now essentially a membership-required site oriented toward paid memberships and their hookup app. After you view a few pages in their directory of cruisy locations, they require you to join. It also appears that their directory is smaller than ours and does not include the vast history of reviews that we've built up over the years, many of which are entertaining to read in and of themselves.

Keith's model here at CFS was always to remain a totally free site if possible and not require people to register to view our content. Thus, CFS is more reliant on advertising revenue and runs on a much smaller budget. Unfortunately, that also means that CFS is slower to implement needed upgrades and changes as the online world changes, since we never have a lot of money. That became even more acute in Keith's final years when he battled cancer and in the period since.

Meanwhile, as Craigslist and various hookup-specific sites and later apps came into being, many with a paid aspect, CFS has had to concentrate on the Sex Listings more and more as our primary unique function. We believe that we have the largest directory of cruisy spots of any site and we keep it free and hope to do so as long as possible.

Anyhow, although Squirt.org and CFS are no longer in direct competition, here's an account of what's up with them involving billboards in Miami including photos of members and user names. It seems to be getting them a lot of attention as a hookup site, although it's not something CFS has the budget nor the desire to do:

An excerpt of the story:
Quote:

In November, Squirt.org’s “Non-Stop Hookups” bus advertising campaign stirred up the local community in Miami, resulting in vandalism and eventual removal by the City of Miami.

Pink Triangle Press (PTP) then mobilized the gay community and started a petition on Change.org to have the city allow the ads.

Recently Out-front Media reached out to PTP about reinstating the campaign with a new creative, which launched on May 4, on the I-95 highway en route from Miami to Fort Lauderdale.

The ad campaign reportedly went through a rigorous approval process, where even the user names displayed on the phone screen had to be adjusted.

“We are excited to have our campaign back in the Miami / Fort Lauderdale area.” said PTP’s Digital Business Director Attila Szatmari. “We worked very hard to get our ads reinstated. Ad equality is very important and we are excited that ads targeting the gay community are back in the streets with other ads where they belong.

We also worked very closely with Outfront to create a less suggestive but still sexy ad that would not offend the local community.” said Szatmari.

After the controversy in Florida and most recently in Dallas, Squirt.org launched its ad campaign targeting racism in online dating in the metro Chicago area on May 4.
