I last used one of these places about a month ago - Apsara. Didn't get a choice of masseur and decided I'd go for the special of the day which was 999 baht, from memory. Towards the end the masseur decided he'd start fingering my ass and then thought he'd "top" me (no condom). I soon changed his mind for him. He came pretty quickly after I let him stick it between my legs but he wasn't at all interested in doing anything for me!!! Previously I'd had a guy who wanted me to suck him but wouldn't even wank me. What's the next place down the road towards Rama IV like - it must be almost on the corner of Soi 2?

As for letting people know the minimum tip - a friend tells me (from his acquaintance with massage boys) that Japanese customers are the absolute worst at tipping in supposed no-sex places (like Apsara) where no minimum tip signs are displayed. I've even seen a sign in a traditional Thai massage place that tells the customer tipping is not compulsory

That's because tipping is not part of Japanese culture. Even sex services are priced by the hour there, with no negotiation and no tip expected.

Tipping at traditional Thai massage parlors is neither required nor expected -- thus no sign. Many people give a small tip (50 - 100 baht), though they will not chase you down the street and bash your head in if you give nothing like they would in a sex massage place.

So's Australia but I don't think there are too many Australians who try it on in Bangkok!

I think the Australians are probably a little more clued in about the world beyond their island shores than the Japanese are. Anyway, I think having a sign is a good idea, and it certainly does not offend me in the least.

My take is that if a minimum tip is displayed it tells you it is a sex establishment and one should not be afraid to ask the mama-san exactly what the tip covers - just a hand job, getting smoked... If you do not think the boy deserves the minimum tip you just tell him you will give him the tip at the cashiers desk when you have checked with the mama-san if a cursory hand job with nothing else is what is was supposed to cover. Likely then the boy will just take your Bht500. In the other establishments like Apsara and Silom massage the boys are usually not backward in negotiating the tip before they do anything.

Following up on Sextiles comment that the mama-san should explain to a new customer up front - that is what happened to me last week in an excellent spa in Bali - Mams-san took me to the room, had me undress and sitting ready for foot scrub, then said no fucking or sucking but you get a hand job if you want and you can touch the masseur and it is normal to give a tip of x - y. As it turned out the 90 minutes seemed to be one long hand job and the guy had his clothes off and let me suck him with out any hesitation.

The name is Gallery Spa - details on Utopia. It is a small spa (I think 4 rooms) so best to book ahead and a bit off the beaten track so get them to organise a taxi to pick you up or take your mb so the driver can call them. They have young good looking guys.

Also went to Bonita spa in Bali - was four wooden shacks with nails in the door to hang your clothes on - so not at all like their website pictures. Handsome guys but mine was in to nothing extra what so ever.

In BKK at the weekend went to Senso Spa and had their scrub and massage. Good rooms. For the minimum tip for 90mins it was BHT1,200 I kept asking what it included but he was evasive until he asked did I want a top or bottom. Said bottom and then he asked the "bottoms" to line up to one side. Massage was not that erotic and so so. Boy then wanted a minimum tip of bht2,000. Sex was ok but nothing special.

Then went across to Best Massage (JJ Plaza now Silom sixty something? next to Thaniya and connected by BTS walkway) Showed me picture book of guys to choose from. Rooms were open at the top. Massage ok. Boy gave hand job and took trousers off to be stroked but not smoked.

In 10 years of lurking on this board, I can't recall seeing many comments on the quality of masseurs' hand-jobs. This seems surprising, as I have found the occasional one outstanding.

For instance, trying FAN CLUB for the first time (a newish massage shop with good facilities situated on Soi Convent, in a little un-numbered sub-soi nearly opposite the Swiss hotel, 5 minutes' walk from Saladaeng BTS station), from a line-up of 10 supposedly versatile masseurs I picked a lanky, rather shy-looking, handsome 24-year-old and within the hour he had me writhing and gasping and shooting cum like a youngster.

Why was it that good? I couldn't find anything unusual about his hands, but he said that customers often reacted strongly to his touch, he didn't know why.

Anyone else had this kind of unexpected delight, or know why it happens? To me, it just seems that some masseurs have the touch and others don't, but it sure would be useful to know who the great m/bators are - for those of us not of an exclusively anal persuasion.

My clean, spacious massage room was complete with an impressive model of Nelson's historic flagship, HMS Victory, which could have strayed from the British embassy. More to the point, it had a big shower where the masseur joined me both before - so good for getting friendly - and after. I had the basic 1 hour oil at 500 baht plus tip.
