A bus from Kuala to Penang and v.v. was not a good exprience for me. It stoped somewhere in between and had to wait for a long time before it continued. A night train with private bed room was very good indeed. A Malay cebin crew who came round at night to sell drinks and snacks was drop-dead gorgeous. I had a very good sleep on the train. The best way to travel these days is flying with AirAsia I think. Fares start from 10 ( ten ) baht one way plus taxes and fees.
If you get bored or have spare time in Bangkok, you can also fly from BKK to Penang direct with AirAsia, costing from 700 baht one way plus taxes.
