I've been trying to stay out of this particular thread as I thought that sensible precautions would provide an answer to the question, but I see that there is still some debate on the matter.
As a person given to much delightful sexual experimentation over the last 34 years of my life, might I venture to provide a few personal insights and suggestions here?
On the Use of a Condom During Oral Sex
I have found that it helps prevent accidental cuts and scratches from the fellater's teeth. For those of you who have a particularly sensitive glans, it also helps to cut down on the discomfort when the fellater accidentally clamps down too hard with his palate/gums, etc.
The real boon should be for those of you who have "timing" problems... technically, the slight initial loss of sensitivity should help to prevent a "trigger-happy" reaction, but if you follow my suggestions below, I am not sure that it will...haha!
Regarding the taste of latex, I have found that washing the condom with warm water (no soap - just in case your soap's acidity causes the condom to break) helps to get rid of the taste of the lubricant - the rubber itself does not have a particularly strong or repellant taste once properly washed. Need I say that gently washing a condom that has already been "fitted on" is a very erotic activity which can also be a lot of fun?
But if you still feel icky about the rubber taste/smell, then you might want to try my solution. I have used honey, the locally produced condensed milk (a thick and extremely sweet milk product), as well as the cup jelly which kids love. That's also sweet ans smears easily. All three substances are cheap and may be easily obtained from any supermarket or sundry shop (especially the last two).
DO NOT USE ANY FORM OF OIL as this might either weaken the condom's material or even cause it to melt in your mouth. THAT you do not want, I assure you!
As to whether it is erotic or not, all I can say is that it is all in your mind. I give and receive oral sex with and without condoms and I find that apart from the slightly naughty aspect involved when using my edible "lubricants" I find that it doesn't really make much difference sensation-wise once the going gets hard...or should that be the hard gets going?

PS
If any of you don't agree with my suggestions, might I encourage you to conduct a few delightful experiments of your own, and then report back here with the results of your research?
I have never yet encountered any objections to these experiments with condoms, from my Thai guys. Quite a few joined in rather gleefully - especially when milk and jelly were used.
