In Japan, Christmas is not a religious holiday. Instead it is more like a day for lovers, similar to Valentine's Day in the West. Restaurants and hotels are almost always booked in advance so that couples (or just dates) can have a romantic time together.
If one is single in Japan, peer and social pressure are so strong that you are considered a loser if you do not have a date.
Some couples even consider going to a Christian religious service as part of the romance.
Just to broaden the horizons of those unfamiliar with Japan.
