Just the fact that the door is partially open is not the best indicator of someone looking for action. It could be they just forgot to fully close the door. I would be careful.
Motel cruising indications:
Drapes open, lights on, guy looking out for people driving or walking around by the window.
Towel hung, usually folded, in the window with the open drapes... hang it where is is clearly visible.
