Just like the old airport, how far you have to walk depends on which gate your plane stops at. At Don Muang, if your international flight landed at Gate 1 and you had to connect to a domestic flight, that would have been about a 3 kilometer walk.
I've only been through the new airport once, but my gate was only one quick travelator away from the immigration counter (no line). I didn't notice any a/c problem, but it was at night so maybe that had something to do with it.
Anyway, expats and regular travelers never seem to be truly happy unless they have something to complain about.
