In my experience, they are a mixture of students, soldiers, and unemployed regular guys. It is the same "AYOR" that accompanies picking up street trade anywhere. Should there be an unpleasant scene, there is no bar to go back to for recourse.
A friend of mine (a Thai) who picked up one of these guys ended up with an eight-inch knife wound in his belly and the loss of a gold necklace. An isolated experience, perhaps, but caution is always advised. I would not pick up a street boy while wearing expensive jewelry or carrying a lot of cash. Otherwise, you're probably OK.
