I don't know if we were in the same city. I was in Buenos Aires for 2 months and didn't experience any problems. Unsuspecting gringo friends were ripped off by taxi drivers, but there are ways to ensure that won't happen. I know a few people who were mugged on the Subte, but again, they weren't paying attention. I don't think Buenos Aires is any more dangerous than any city in the US. You just have to be careful and don't be an idiot.
As far as gay cruising spots, if you go, check out Tom's on Viamonte. I had some major dick there. Really hot.
