I go there on a regular basis and it's indeed mostly the eye-candy (university students and the likes) that draws me there. I'm not into toilet cruising, but it's really easy to get
in touch with salespersons and shoppers alike.
I don't really see the point of comparing Union Mall to MBK, as the former is mostly for younger Thais and the latter mostly for tourists. Rather naturally, the selection of products on sale and the price levels differ.
