There is something to be said for being in a place where you can't understand much of anything being spoken. It can allow for better focus with less distraction from the world around you. Here I sit in Hamburg and can't speak more than a few words of German. But conversing with the locals isn't really what I had in mind -- at least conversing in the method often associated with that word: talking. I intend to converse alright but in the langugage of moans, groans, grabbing of the dick, positioning of the ass. It is truly the universal language of love.

Anyhow, I'm running to play catchup with Aaron Lawrence who has been busily posting away elsewhere on this Website about his trip to Russia, an expedition to make porn. While my time abroad can't compare to making a porn flick with impoverished Russian military boys, I'll try to offer something worthwhile.

I'm staying in an apartment in the Saint Pauli district, just a short walk to the infamous Red Light district. When I first visited Hamburg two years ago, it was the unexpected highlight of my German tour that included Berlin, Frankfurt, and Cologne. I realize Hamburg is a city that few of my American compatriots would consider visiting, but I hope you'll use this running commentary to help you decide. I'm here for 2 months and will post what I've uncovered, some pics of various sites, and whatever else comes up.

What is it about Hamburg? How about a very brief background that may begin to explain why cruisers might consider a trip here. Hamburg is a port town and that helps explain why the sex trades have proliferated here for so long. The Reeperbahn is a short walk from the harbor where sailors disembark after months at sea. As far back as the 1800's, the sex scene was taking form here and it is a point of pride for city government that Hamburg has managed to learn how to co-exist with the sex trades in a way that few other cities in the world have. Hamburg is truly a fresh experience for any American cruiser and one I couldn't wait to enjoy more fully the next time I could get away to Germany.
