The idea of being so public is both exciting and terrifying. One of the ABS near here has taken out the booths and put in "theaters" (1 straight 1 gay) however from what I gather the theaters are just a flat screen TV with folding chairs in a 12 x 12 room - not the real "theater experience".

Although I've never gone to a porn theater, back in the 1970s when I was a teenager my former brother-in-law worked at one. I can't remember if he was a part-time manager, the projectionist, the ticket booth attendant, or what. I think he actually had to perform many different tasks there. I gathered it was a sort of run-down place, a former 1940s Art Moderne style neighborhood theater fallen on hard times. My mother also used to drive right past it every day going across the city to work, so we would sort of joke about it.

Mom wasn't judgmental and liked risque humor, though nothing explicit. What's ironic is that my former brother-in-law had also been Pentecostal (we were not) and on Sundays he would travel with my sister (a convert) to preach and sing at various small Pentecostal churches in the region, mostly in small towns. We never talked about his job -- here again is that thing about how we left a lot of things unsaid back then, allowing people more freedom in some ways -- but it always did seem funny to me that a Pentecostal preacher also ran a porn theater. A few years later my sister and he got divorced (lots of reasons, among them he sometimes has trouble staying at a job very long) and she also left that religion.

I have seen news stories about how a lot of old classic theater buildings were saved - by becoming porn theaters. They were in neighborhoods that had become rundown as the young professionals moved out of the cities and the only way they could stay in business was by running porn. And as a sign of how things change many of these areas have now become very upscale again as the new generation is tired of the drive to the suburbs and have taken back over the cities - and a lot of these theaters have been restored and are back in business.




So a guy so involved in Pentecostal religion that he preached on Sundays spent the rest of the week mopping up the floors in a porn theater - damn does that sound like a perfect research topic for a Psych paper! LOL
