I saw a message on another website I cruise, and apparently, Man's World is closing for good on September 6, to make way for condo's. Does anyone know anything about this? And, where do we go now? The last time I was at Man's Country, it was FILTHY, smelled of shit, and there were nothing but scary looking guys.
I'm sure others would appreciate knowing about this also.       |

I highly, highly doubt this to be the case. This rumor has been floating around Man's World for way more than 2 years. Until I see a wrecking ball demolishing brick, I still won't believe it to be the case.
If it should, however, I suggest we move the Sunday afternoon bear parties to Steamworks. No, it's not as convenient parking-wise - but it sure as hell beats the "step down" that Man's Country would be. Because of the rumor, I decided to try Man's Country on a Saturday night when it presumably would be at its busiest. I got stuck in one of those first floor rooms with the timed lighting (dark, semi-dark, almost pitch black, suddenly operating room glare, over and over again all evening.) Because these two "chatty-cathys" at the end of the hall wouldn't shut the fuck up about their workout routines, I got absolutely zero cruise traffic. Moving through the building wasn't much better. The only place with any video porn was the theater dancefloor and they were busy setting up for some super-elaborate stage show with plumes of white fabric and complicated lighting moves. By 1:00 p.m. the show still hadn't gone on, nearly no bathhouse attendees were still waiting around and to top it off, THERE WERE ACTUAL WOMEN IN THE CRUISE AREA. Not trannies. But full-fledged women, giggling and waiting for the strippers to arrive. Nothing kills a horny bathhouse vibe like drunk bachelorettes. The highest concentration of people was in the television room where approximately 12 hideous hose-beasts were intently watching "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" on the big-screen television and smoking like little chimneys. The second floor seems reserved for scraggly, just-above-street-person types that like to smoke illegal substances. The air was thick with non-cigarette type smoke. Almost no rooms were open to the hallways. What little sex seemed to be happening (and mind you, this was in 2, maybe 3 rooms in the ENTIRE PLACE) was behind closed doors. There doesn't seem to be an orgy space. Gloryholes are nonexistent. Bears of any type (my sole interest at any of these places) were in seriously short supply. I stayed for maybe an hour and a half, drumming my fingers on my blank cubicle wall and wanting desperately to strangle tweedle-dum and tweedle-dee, trading post-workout smoothie recipes for all to hear. Maybe it was an off night. But I kinda doubt it. Steamworks has serious drawbacks as we all know. The twinkies can't seem to douse themselves in enough chemical scents, "product" or shameless attitude. (Who wants to fuck a hairless skeleton anyway?) The price is significantly higher than Man's World ever was. The theme rooms might as well not be there for all the chance you actually have of scoring one. The closeted married guys (who seemed to be the heart and soul of Man's World) won't come within a thousand yards of Boystown, let alone an "out" there and obvious bathhouse like Steamworks. There is zero parking, unless you want to pay outrageous lot fees. And did I mention the overabundance of hideous, full-of-themselves twinks? But the facility, when properly "manned," can't be beat. As much as possible, we need to migrate the usual Man's World crowd over to Steamworks. With Man's Country seemingly beyond redemption, Steamworks becomes our only choice. |

Grunter, If I remember correctly I was there that night that movie was playing on the bigscreen and I had a great time! I probably got fucked by at least six or seven hot bears or bear chasers during the night.
Maybe it's just your attitude (which seems pretty piss poor). People can unconciously pick up on that without you even having to open your mouth. I personally love going to Man's Country BECAUSE of the diverse clientelle and have never failed to have a good time. Relax, it's a place to go to suck and fuck--NOT the Hilton! |

I have no information about Man's World's status, but I can add that there was an article in The Reader earlier this summer about the impact that major property tax hikes are having on businesses along the Clark Street commmercial strip that includes Man's World at its southern end.
At least two businesses closed their doors after getting tax bills that were double or even triple what they were last year. Many other business owners quoted in the article questioned their ability to stay in business much longer. So it would not be surprising if this were the motivation for Man's World to close. It seems unlikely that condos would be the culprit. The condo market is slowing and there are already over 100 units going up just down the street from MW that I doubt are all sold yet. Obviously, Man's World serves a purpose for some guys, but I personally didn't care for the place, so I will not miss it. If it does close, there's a pretty good chance that that another bathhouse will open somewhere else in the city. A city of Chicago's size could easily support another bath or two. |

Suddenly deciding I could use a good blow job, I thought I could get one last Bear Sunday, 9/10, in at Man's World. However, when I showed up on Sunday afternoon, the doors were locked. It is just amazing how poorly that place was managed. With just a little marketing (and a little maintenance) that place could have been great. If they had had an ounce of brains, they would at least have announced a date certain by which they would close. They could have had a big final Sunday and at least made a few bucks on the last day. But no, just clueless to the very end.
