I visited the Tokyo and Osaka theatres in the nineties when I was teaching in Japan. I was put-off by the attitude of some of the older men against western visitors. I wonder what happened to the video box stalls where you paid for a vdo tape and watched it in a small cubicle with glory holes to the next cubicle. The other punters often got a shock to see a western guy "attached to a cock".
