There are bookstores in Yorkville, Whitesboro and Marcy, all Utica suburbs. There are two undeveloped rest areas, just pullovers, on the Thruway between these two cities. The west bound one is just beyond Rome, while the east bound one is further west. A lot of the trees and brush have been removed to prevent cruising, but you can always find some lonely truckers here. The developed rest area at Westmoreland is too heavily patrolled for any action.
Heading north from Utica, there are undeveloped rest areas on both sides just north of Barneveld. Never had any luck at either one. Would like to hear from anybody in Rome, NY about cruising spots. I'm sure when the Air Force base was there, some action was going on. Is anything still left?

Here's a few outdoor spots that are fun when it's not winter - the rest area on rt. 20 four miles east of Morrisville is always busy, there will be cruisers in the woods until the snow gets deep; and the rest area on rt. 46 just north of rt. 31 about 10 miles south of Rome
has some fun traffic. Good Luck!

The Rt. 46 rest area backs right up to the Erie Canal at Walker Road. Google doesn't show a lot of cover and there are houses across the street. Is there much hassel with the local police there?
Not familiar with the Rt. 20 rest area. Is it near the White Pines Trailer Park? I notice a turnoff there, but couldn't tell if it was a rest area or driveway. (Google)
