I just don't have the gay hang-out skills to connect in those places (I'm convinced it's all based on having the right unconscious osmosis--and being able to waste enormous amounts of time to become a fixture in a place).

Cool... knowing where foreigner friendly gay bars are will be useful.

Interesting... I kind of prefer meeting guys in clubs and bars. It feels more natural... you know? You make eye contact... flirt a little... get to know each other... dance... kiss... cop a feel... You have an awesome night and then you invite him back with you for a little love makin'..... mmmm.

But when traveling, it has to be a place where language isn't going to be too big an issue... and some place reasonably friendly. Some clubs it's easy to go alone and chat up cute guys. Other places, it's kind of not as friendly and most people are in groups of friends so it's hard.

... . But I don't speak Portugese.

-- Possibly I was fortunate in having Latin beaten into me from my earliest years at skool? I studied French from the tender age of 6YO. and Spanish sometime later. Italian was sorta kinda picked-up sometime & somehow along the way; thus I was not too unfamiliar with Romance languages.
- While I've not visited BRAZIL I've been several times to MADEIRA, where I was told that I spoke Portuguese like an Italian! I asked if that was a compliment? A roar of laughter and a new friendship was sealed over cups of coffee - Brazilian, of course!
- My advice, for what little it's worth, is don't be afraid if you no speaka da lingo; just go ahead and do it! :)
