-- Dare one write that that might be another nail in the LoS'. tourism?

-- Reportedly some economists are of the opinion that the economies of BRAZIL, RUSSIA, INDIA & CHINA, (the so-called 'BRIC.' Gp.), are bound to start going UP in their forseeable future.

May be and you would have to be well disposed to Argentina wouldn't you... I mean the first legal gay marriage between a couple who have been together for 27 years occurred this week. Makes you wanna shed a tear...

I think that article is wrong, and that the legal age in Brazil is 14 (although the article might be right about legal age for prostitution). I tried Sao Paulo about 6 years ago. It was very hard to meet guys--and very few street guys seemed like they would perform. Almost nobody spoke any English. There were two suck cinemas next to each other--and I had some great luck in there (but the luck was very spaced apart). I went to a sauna and was the only non-Brazilian. There were loads and loads of hot young Brazilians, and I absolutely could not connect with anyone--they were extremely stuck-up. I don't go with underage--but I saw some on the streets, but was warned by a Brazilian about 45 to be very careful (he said don't trust anyone). This Brazilian was walking in the street at about 2 in the morning--he would not walk on the sidewalk--to avoid being robbed.

There were also some adult bookstores wth booths--but that was a total waste of time. I also found a shopping mall to cruise--and had some limited success there.

I thought Brazilian guys looked very very hot. Almost none are 100% white--almost all look like a negro/indian mix--almost all of them look very similar (same mix).

I have been to Brazil 4 times and will return in September. The major cities have fabulous rent boy saunas. If you are prepared to pay for sex these places are unbelievable (and cheap!). Before I went for the first time I read reviews of the rent boy saunas and the comments like "feeling like a kid in a candy store" and "thought I had died and gone to heaven" are based on my experience under statements. It is not a safe country and outside cruising can be dangerous. Confine your activities to the saunas and you will have the time of your life.

Where do you meet (non rent) gay guys in Brazil? Do many of them speak English?

I met two in suck cinemas and they spoke perfect English. I met a white guy (Brazilian of apparently Northern Italian descent (blond hair, blue eyes, light skin) who could undertand ZERO English) in a shopping mall restroom.

Can you give some indication of how much they expect? How do you find these rent boy saunas? I went to an advertised sauna in Sao Paulo and it was all stuck up guys--none of whom seemed interested in any money whatsoever. They were all posing, and few were connecting.

Forgot to mention: Brazil requires a visa by U.S. citizens--I think the cost is around $100. It's a slight hassle because one must enclose passport-size photos and fill out an application. Brazil only requires a visa if your country requires a visa by Brazilians.

The GAY TRAVEL BRAZIL.com - The Best Site for Gay Travel to Brazil: Gay-Friendly Hotels, Discounted Flights, Gay Guides, and Travel Advice for the Gay Traveler. site is a mine of information on gay Brazil. The 2 rent boy saunas in Sao Paulo are Lagoa (the best in Brazil. To quote one of the originators of the gay travel Brazil site, there is star quality all over Brazil but at Lagoa there are more stars than there are in the heavens) and the Sauna Fragata. In Rio there is 117 (the best in Rio), Point 202 and a number of others I have not frequented. The going rate (confirmed by a recent discussion on Gay Travel Brazil) is 50R (about $28.5 US) but some (the more spectacular looking or "best equipped") may bargain up to 100R.
Most of the boys you will find are great but you must be prepared for the odd dud or the gold grubber who will find an excuse to revisit the agreed price or claim a "misunderstanding" the minute you enter a cubicle. As I do not speak the language my policy is to write down a figure on a piece of paper (provided at most saunas eg Lagoa) with R for real after the figure. This policy has served me well.
Hope this helps.

Two of your best sources for information are right here. This excellent piece was prepared for us by a guy who frequents Brazil rentboys in the local saunas:

You should also check our listings which include many listings about places rentboys can be found:

Yes definitely one must make clear it's Reals instead of U.S. Dollars. I had a nasty dispute with a street hustler who later claimed I said Dollars, and eventually we compromised (at first, I smiled and said absolutely not, and he got very nasty and wouldn't let me out of the room in the sex hotel--and he was very very adamant that "we have a problem here" and very adamant that I was not going to get out of that room--even after I started yelling). That must be a regular scam they pull. And he really didn't perform like he said in the first place. My impression over the 6 days I was in Sao Paulo is that a lot of the guys are drug addicts or otherwise very needy of money--and don't really perform. A lot of the ones in the cinemas have nasty attitude problems (giving me looks like "what are you looking at--you better not come near me", and the one sauna I went to was 100% narcissic posers who just wanted to walk around all night (and especially stand in the open shower) but not connect with anyone (even though everyone else was very hot). I'll try to go back, and want to check out the purportedly heaven-like rent boy saunas--but something tells me that they're not going to be that great. Do most of the guys really cum--or do they just do some minimum and get their money? I know you answered that, yes, it's just an occassional scammer--but I'm still worried.

I avoided gay clubs/discos and bars--they appeared to be a total waste of time, but I walked by a few and it seemed they're filled with only young Brazilians, and these guys are not going to have anything to do with a foreigner, and one might have big language problems. I found Portugese to be amazingly difficult to understand (the pronunciation is amazingly strange). I know some French, and I was able to read some Portugese. All I remember about speaking Brazilian Portugese is that "gauze" means "cum." It was funny: the Brazilians talk fast and assume you know what' they're talking about (even though you don't speak any Portugese). They then try to explain over and over again in rapid Portugese--they have no concept that their language is totally foreign. Also, it sounds like arabic or something (not Spanish or French). To some extent, it SOUNDS closer to Italian than any other Romance language--but that was just my uninformed perception over 5 or 6 days.

Actually I remember reading that there are lots of trendy gay bars in Jardins area of Sao Paulo (a suburb) and supposedly those might be more foreigner-friendly. But my life experience has taught me to avoid clubs/discos and bars--ALWAYS a total waste of time. I just don't have the gay hang-out skills to connect in those places (I'm convinced it's all based on having the right unconscious osmosis--and being able to waste enormous amounts of time to become a fixture in a place).

Crikey... Thanks for the heads up. The language thing sounds like a nightmare. That's one thing I'm worried about.

Well, I'm young and good looking so I usually like to pick up in clubs and such. But I don't speak Portugese.
