Was in Koh Phangan a couple of weeks ago to visit a friend's yoga resort. Beautiful island - a backpacker's paradise I would describe it. I stayed a few days only but not a ladyboy in sight, though those tanned backpackers were lovely to look at! Resorts are being built at a fast and furious pace there.

Btw, the men's bathroom at the Koh Samui arrivals is the most beautiful and tasteful I have ever seen. I could move right in - a big tropical fishtank in the entrance and built around a glass enclosed courtyard. It looks like a 60's modernist guest house.

Probably not as getting there is big hassle. bangkok hotel to koh phangan resort took me around 7 hours: wait at airport, 1 hr flight to samui, wait at samui airport for bus to ferry, wait at ferry, 1/2 hr ferry ride to phangan, motorcycle to resort.

Unless an airport is built, it will probably remain cheap but overbuilt. Before the building boom began, the cheapest bungalow went for 100 bahts. Apparently the full moon festivals are extremely lucrative for the drug trade, so much so that they added 2 half-moon festivals each month.
