As I say, the age of consent for commercial sex in Thailand is 18 (see Gay Asia and Asian Gay and Lesbian Resources by Utopia 大同 advisory, for example), and that's counted as the Western way (ie. he has to have reached his 18th birthday). My preference is for young men who look to be in their twenties. Since I only ever take a boy back to my hotel from nearby bar, and he always looks to be in his twenties, and I always stay at Tarntawan where security checks on IDs, I've pretty much minimized any risks the Land of Scams may put my way in that department.

Some people assert that all gay sex is interpreted as commercial by some Thai authorities.

Straight or gay is irrelevant. 18 is the number.

The only exception, or so I am led to believe, is within a marriage sanctioned by the parents (individuals under 18 may marry, but the parents' permission is required).

Whatever, 18 is not debatable for any casual encounters -- gay or straight.

Talking boys
 

Just wondering what the difference is between 'talking boys' and other boys.

Can you give us a source for this information? If you google "Thailand age of consent" you can find information that is different from what you have provided.

Not off hand, but I'm sure I read it somewhere.

In any case, all anyone needs to know is that 18 is the magic number.

As ICON says, the legal age of consent for anything which is / looks like / smells like commercial sex is 18.

Over the years there have been many instances of farang claiming (both with boys and girls) that 'it's not commercial'. Forget it, it won't work!
