I wonder why it is that certain types will never pass up the opportunity to slip in a comment that denigrates Thais without any possibility of being based on anything more than an emotional vent.

The quality of most things, unfortunately, depends on money spent. Looking at any of the better quality hotels, shopping malls, historic monuments, artistic efforts in terms of paintings, etc. I would say that a good deal of the standard Thai workmanship is excellent.

If you spend all your time in B250 a night accomodations, sleazy massage joints and bar beers, your assesssment of Thai people as well as their abilities is hardly based on a realistic understanding of either.

Whatever has turned you into a bitter old thing, it's nothing to do with Thai standards nor qualified you to sit in judgement.

I couldn't agree more. As a rule of thumb, you get what you pay for.

One great thing about Thailand is the range that is on offer, there's affordable versions of pretty much everything for those who cannot or don't want to spend more.

Years ago at Babylon, I was in the gym and a machine broke - a farang who was working there said, "oh, must be made in Thailand". The Thais who heard it were very offended. My guess was that it was made in USA (I'm American). Thailand is a beautiful country with much to offer. They might not have the money that many Western/colonial powers do, but please be respectful.

Indeed. Thailand's public debt is at 40% of its GDP, a (lowish) figure most "Western/colonial powers" can only dream of these days.

The private sector also has plenty of money. Sure, there's a lack of equal opportunities, but that's more of an illusion in many Western countries, too. Especially since ordinary tax payers have been forced to "bail out" the "elite".

So from today's point of view, us Westerners are well advised to have a somewhat humble, modest attitude when passing judgment on other countries.
