Advise on hotel

Hi guys. Going BKK late this month and I'm about to book hotel. Been looking at some located around Silom, such as Tower Inn, Pinnacle, Tarntawan, Silom Serene. Anyone here have some good advise? Looking for a hotel allowing taking guys back to the room and with friendly staff. Please give me some help! :confused:

spooky 14th June 2002 09:32 AM

no problem with the pinnacle. i stayed at the pinnacle last year and had guys come to the hotel and come right up to the room.

jtrack33 14th June 2002 08:08 PM

Hotels in the Silom area that won't allow you to take boys to your room are extremely rare. Any of the ones you mentioned would think it odd if you didn't take a boy to your room.

Morten,

Please have a look through our Archives:

Thailand Archives

You will find lots of discussion about hotels saved there.

buttholeboy 16th June 2002 09:59 AM

I've just come back from Bangkok and stayed in the Tarntawan - fantastic hotel. It's well situated and you can take boys back no problem - they have a guard on at night who takes the boy's id card and when the boy leaves (as they usually do)you get a phone call to your room asking whether everything is ok - service or what!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

iamjerseyjoe 16th June 2002 03:36 PM

Once again I'm moved to mention the Tower Inn, 533 Silom Road. If you book through the internet it is Bt1600 and that includes buffet breakfast. No hassle taking back friends. It is easy walking distance to Patpong.

jtrack33 16th June 2002 09:27 PM

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but when I stay in hotels and take boys back, I also take them downstairs afterwards while they collect their IDs to save them the embarrasemnet of being detained while some guard calls your room to see if everything's ok.

Thai Guy 16th June 2002 10:33 PM

I am staying at the Pinnacle right now. A superior room with breakfast for 2 costs only US$22 book-able from planetholiday.com

A bus stop is on the main road, about 100 yards from the hotel. Most buses that stop here go to Silom and take only 3-5 minutes!

OK, I don't feel at all well with hot and humid weather in Bangkok at the moment so I choose to sleep in an air-conditioned room in a hotel. My parent seem to understand me as I promise to have dinners with them almost every day. :eek: :eek:

Who want to be a millionaire?...ooop..sorry...who want to get up in the morning and have breakfast with me? :D

--------------------------------------------

Jtrack, you sound like a real gentleman! You are handsome too! I wonder why you don't want to have a boyfriend :rolleyes:, given you are not into a one-night-only fling. Sorry and please forgive me for being too personal.

Hotel experiences..

Over the last few years I've been checking out quite some of the so-called gayfriendly hotels in Bkk, here some short notes:

* Swiss Lodge:

Nice personal, first-class Hotel, very nice and big minibars in room, small swimming pool, good location, expensive

* Tarntawan Place:

Smiliar to Swiss Lodge, but I'd prefer Swiss Lodge in this sort of price range; Tarntawan has no pool on its own; breakfast 24hrs, included in room rate (even american breakfast); free internet use in lobby

* Malaysia Hotel:

Uncomplicated, cheap hotel, boys to off in the coffee shop, excellent food in Malai Coffee Shop; quite big pool; but seems not really safe/secure (bad experiences with credit cards left in suitcase in room).

* Pinnacle Lumpinee:

Excellent value for money. Nice staff, location near Malaysia Hotel and Babylon; nice rooftop whirlpool; best deal in Silom for me.

* Tower Inn:

Big rooms, nice rooftop pool, furniture in rooms quite run-down, double the price of the pinnacle, but not really better.

* Babylon Barracks:

Baronness Suites very nicely decorated, very nice views from there, but too expensive (3500bt up); Standard rooms not bathroom, no minibar, too expensive for value offering (1000bt).

* Chatra Court Appartements:

Best deal for me in Sukhumvit area (betw. Soi 15 and 19) - very personal, feel at home. Studio rooms big (about 35-40sqm), big fridge, kitchenette, nice pool with no people using it ;-). Gay operated.

LuvThailand 7th July 2002 03:42 AM

Hotel around Silom - well, I stayed at Tarntawan Place earlier this year, and I give it the thumbs up for several reasons.
It is located right near the major gay venues, yet it is a quiet place to stay.
It is within walking distance of Babylon :-)
It is gay owned and the staff are great.
The breakfast waiter is CUTE.
Security is excellent, yet the staff are discreet.
It is reasonably priced considering it's excellent location.
Taking "friends" back to the room is hassle free.
The rooms are a decent size, very clean, room service is good. Perhaps the only negative is that there are no room safes.

Chris26 7th July 2002 05:22 AM

Tarntawan Place

The Tarntawan within "walking distance" to Babylon?! Wow, you must be really a sportsman! hehe

jtrack33 7th July 2002 08:59 AM

Most direct walking route from Tarntawan Place to Babylon, via Suan Phlu, is 3.3kms. Via Sathorn soi 1, it's 3.7kms.

LuvThailand 7th July 2002 02:29 PM

There we go - 3.3 kms. Just a gentle stroll.:o

HotAsian25 7th July 2002 05:33 PM

I still stand by my old favourite: SalaDaeng Place.
http://www.asiatravel.com/thailand/saladang/index.html

Prices have gone up to 2,300 bh a night. But the rooms are huge, decent breakfasts, a short 2 KM walk from Babylon and right opp DJ Station/Freeman. Not to mention the mostly affluent Asian gay crowd there and the wild parties/orgies every night.

All the other places incl Pinnacle, Silom Serene and Tower Inn are quite some walk away from the regular gay haunts ie Soi 4 bars/Skytrain/Babylon. The Tarntawan Place has nothing else going for it besides its gay friendliness. The rooms/facilities are smaller and run-down. The location is all wrong being in the middle of Suriwong and way too far from anything fun. And at the prices you pay there, you're better off in the Tower Inn or some other non-gay upmarket hotel.

If you're looking for just raunchy fun around the clock and not too particular about the rooms, try staying at the Babylon Barracks for a few days or the weekend(read the other concurrent thread).

Pnnacle and Booking with Jimmy is hte best deal for the money in Bangkok.

Happy Hunting,

jess

midwestbttmboy32 31st July 2002 05:14 AM

I have stayed all over Silom area--Tarntawan, Saladang Place, Babylon Barracks, Swiss Lodge, and now the Pinnacle. By far, the best deal is the Pinnacle. It's the cheapest (850 baht thru Jimmy), includes 2 ABF, taxes, and is within walking distance of good Thai places ("JustOne"is really nice, on the corner between Babylon and the Malaysia Hotel)....

it's friendly, breakfast is the same as at Saladang Place, probably better; the furnishings in the room are the same or better than the Tarntawan; the room has a cheap mini-bar, CNN, and a rooftop jacuzzi with a gym that is in decent condition (not great, but you could work out if you're not too picky). Very cheap laundry service (25 baht/kg) is available just down the soi near the 7-11. All for less than half the price of Saladang, Tarntawan, or Swiss Lodge. If only it had gang showers, like Babylon Barracks!

Thai Guy 31st July 2002 05:09 PM

There are 3 types of rooms at the Pinnacle :-

Standard room : on low floors, has old TV without remote control, not sure if it has kettle & coffee.

Superior room : on high floors, has new-looking TV with remote control, Kettle and coffee.

Suite : Don't know. Never been invited to stay in this room yet. :p

But all rooms have a fridge, air-conditioner and private bathroom.

Booking a "superior" room at asiatravelmart.com costs $20 and $21 at planetholiday.com, both include breakfast for 2.

Don't know what type of room you get when booking with Jimmy.

Chris26 31st July 2002 05:12 PM

Room type (Jimmy)

Booking via Jimmy lets you end up in a superior room in the pinnacle (750bt. without Bf, 850bt. incl. BF).

Whois Jimmy

Hey Chris
How to get hold of this Jimmy to book a room at the Pinnacle?
Thanks.

Chris26 4th August 2002 09:50 AM

Jimmy (Pinnacle)

To reach Jimmy, book through www.dragoncastle.net or directly to his e-mail Address: jimmyfirst@hotmail.com; you can also call the Pinnacle Hotel and ask for room 1312 - that's where he's staying.

orlguy06 4th August 2002 09:56 PM

hotels in BKK

note to anyone staying at Pinnacle: there is a CHARGE for phone use.so anyone with a laptop should take note.i think the charge for all the time i was on the laptop was around $100US.quite a surprise for the end of my 10 day stay!

midwestbttmboy32 5th August 2002 02:55 PM

I just checked out after 7 nights, and my telephone costs were about 900 Baht.....but I made several calls a day. Each local call to a regular phone is 5 baht, quite reasonable for a hotel (though the Tarntawan is free).... what probably happened is that you called a mobile phone: they charge 20 baht PER MINUTE for calls to mobile phones! So, be careful of that. It's a great profit for them, but really makes you feel ripped off, since it costs them about 2-3 baht per minute......other than that, I did really enjoy my stay at the Pinnacle....great value for money.

orlguy06 5th August 2002 06:09 PM

ADVISE ON HOTELS

actually, they charge per minute.........spend a few hours on gay.com and the baht mount up FAST

boymasseur69 6th August 2002 10:54 AM

Re Hotel phone charges

Guess it's time for a repeat on internet connection charges in Bangkok. The EASIEST of all is to just walk out your hotel (any hotel) and within a block will be an internet shop. They're usually open 10am-10pm every day, and charge as little as 20Baht/hr. No fuss, no muss, no bother, no complaining about hotel overcharging. And we really don't come to Bangkok to spend our days alone in our hotel room on the internet, do we (I don't!)

sasa 12th August 2002 07:01 AM

Anyone as advice for Chateau De Bangkok?

Is it gay friendly?

jtrack33 12th August 2002 10:53 PM

Chateau de Bangkok is in a good location...close to Lumpini and not so far from Ploenchit BTS. I only know of families who have stayed there, but being a serviced apartment, I don't imagine it's gay unfriendly. It's the same company that owns/runs a tower in my condo complex and here it's not gay unfriendly at all....just a typical Thai live-and-let-live pleasant place to stay. But others may have alternative views maybe.....

Re: Who's Jimmy?

The main reason people aren't supposed to put emails in the body of the text is because it's been abused in the past, people have put other peoples email addresses (or URLs) in and it's caused problems for them. We allow them here if it's helping people cruise or for services here in Thailand.

I emailed Jimmy last week and asked him if he minded that his email address was being posted here; to verify that it's a legitimate link. I haven't heard from him yet.

So, my question is, does this guy actually exist? I mean, I see that people here use his service. Does anyone have regular contact with him? If so, have him email me and tell me it's 'OK' for people to put his email up here.

Thanks, Cupidman

JessZelenov 13th August 2002 09:56 AM

Cupidman,

I assure you Jimmy is no ghost I just talked to him the other day. He is easily reached through dragoncastle and stays quite busy with his guest. He has recently moved out of his regular room at the Pinnacle while they renovate his regular room. You may call him at room 1311 now he was in 1312.

I AM SURE HE WOULD LOVE TO KNOW HE IS SUCH A FAVORITE.

One of the reasons I like booking with him is he gives you his mobil phone number tells you if you get in trouble or lost or just need advise to call. His rates are by far the best in the area for what you get. He is Thai and is closely connected with Dragoncastle. I am sure you can email them from their web page about Jimmy if you like.

brief encounter 13th August 2002 08:58 PM

I can vouch for Jimmy also.Have used his service via Dragoncastle and he is particularly helpful and knowledgeable with general tourist enquiries.As mentioned previously Pinnacle is good value and well located if Babylon and nearby Silom is your type of action.I think Thai Guy raised the issue of their superior breakfast to Tarntawan and I agree it has better variety for Asian as well as the standard buffet style breakfast.

If you are a regular visitor to Bangkok try all the hotels mentioned on the board;all of them are interesting in their own way.

St(r)ayed at both, Silom Tower & Tarntawan. Think Silom Tower is much better--And for less money--but, luck-of-the-draw, my room at Tower Inn wasn't at all beat up. Every room--7, as I remember--I've stayed in at Tarntawan, was beat.
Anyway, booked at Pinnacle for upcoming trip.
Questions:
Any problems with the check-in, and go see Jimmy, business? Is he a travel agent?
And, my map shows Pinnacle about 8/10 mile from Silom\Rama IV but friend insists it's much further. . .who's right?

Chris26 28th August 2002 09:07 AM

Re: Tower Inn / Pinnacle

-> Tower Inn:

I've stayed two times at Tower Inn Silom, and both times I got a room on the "Executive Floor" - both cases large rooms, but really a bit run-down (Tarntawan: not really run-down, in my opinion); I had the impression, they rent the "run-down" rooms for this internet rate of about 1500 bt. (these rooms look worse than the rooms in the internet sites of tower inn).

-> Pinnacle:

You book your room with Jimmy - you can see him as a travel agent. When you check-in in Pinnacle Hotel, they normally do know that you've booked the room via Jimmy, and you don't pay them directly (only for the minibar and roomservice etc., of course - that's why they ask for a credit card at check-in, of course). You pay Jimmy (usually pre-payment - meaning, you check in, get your room, than you go to Jimmy and pay him for the room).

Pinnacle is a bit far for walking to Silom Road, I think (especially with the high tropical temperatures of Bangkok), better take a taxi-meter.

Chris26 28th August 2002 09:11 AM

distance from Silom Rd

ooops... Pinnacle Hotel 8/10 miles from Silom Road?????? No no no, it's really not that far!!!! It's much less, would be about 15-20 minutes walking time to Silom Road (Dusit Thani).

Hope, you're not speaking of one of the other two Pinnacle Hotels in Bangkok (Pinnacle Inn and Pinnacle Sukhumvit?)! Be sure, it's Pinnacle Hotel Lumpinee!!

Bearded Brian 28th August 2002 09:22 AM

Chris

Don't think he meant 8 to ten miles but eight tenths of a mile. So based on 20 minutes I would say the distance is just over a mile about 1.6km-1.8km

Don't worry.
The rooms are clean & large. Nice view from front rooms. Insist on a front room: back rooms have NO view & can be noisy.
Big Bathrooms.
Staff & management is very nice, helpful.
Polite Security Guard checks and holds guest I.D. & calls your room when guest leaves to make sure everything is Okay.
Good breakfast--Two, with a double--several choices including Thai & good coffee.
Well located for nightlife: several bars on, or just off, Soi Tarntawn right around the corner, about three blocks to Soi Twilight bars. Print the map from Dreaded Ned.
Well located. If you don't know your way around it's a very good choice--Be sure to ask for a Nam Baht: Wallet-size Hotel card in Thai & English, in case you get lost.

P.S.
Yes, I meant eight-tenths mile from Pinnacle to Silom. And thanks for info.

Pinnacle telephones

When I read this post on telephones I happed to be at the Pinncle. I checked it out. It is 7 baht per call, to Cell phines will be higer rates. However how long you are connected doesn't affect the bill that much. For a really long call like on for an hour internet is 20 baht. What cost if you have automatic redial set on your computer and every time you loose conectoion it will keep redialing all night if you leave the computer on. Every time it calls it will be another 7 baht. so it was not how long you call but how often.

I confirm, this is the hotel I use in BKK. I check in as "A friend of the Tarntawan" I am automatically registered as 2 persons therefore no problem with guests and no extra for the second breakfast !
The nicest little extra are the 6 or 7 business cards that I receive on checkin " Mr, jinks in residence" followed by the Tartawan address !
At a bar I can use the line "Come up and see me sometime" also if you are a little, shall we say tired, one given to the Taxidriver gets you home.
