There is also the point that the cost of living in Bangkok has gone up quite a lot over the last years, and even moreso in the last few months. One quick example: most cut fruits bought from a roving cart have gone from 10Baht to 15Baht in the last 2 weeks.
I agree, I don't buy them drinks. If i invite a young man to sit with me I very quickly but very privately slip him 100Baht, ensuring the man can see it is 100. I also quickly say in Thai 'better than drink tip'. invariably I get a 'chai, kop khun khrap' (yes,, thank you).
My rationale is that if you refuse a drink for the boy and you don't tip until you leave then there is the possibility the man thinks you are just stingy, and not the way to set up a good rapport with the man
