Well let's get to the bottom line here.
Young men who work in these places are there for one thing; trying to make some money, and for a very very large percentage it would not be their chosen work if they had other options.
Most are hoping they can make some big bucks and move along (after all they hear lots of stories, and are often given over the top hopes by venue owners). Some of course stay because they find they can put up with the whole thing for a possibly better than average monthly income.
And, as most 'visitors' to Thailand know, through various processes, pretty much all Thais believe that all westerners are rich. Rightly or wrongly that's the impression Thai's have. And it's not only Thailand, I often work in Vietnam. In the same 'trade' working men have the same impression; all westerners are rich.
