Even with all of today's enlightenment and progress, the military is still a very difficult environment for men and women who aren't 100% hetero. While outright hostility may be tamped-down, there is plenty of subtle hostility. Junior high school-like exclusion from hanging with the popular kids is not at all uncommon. It does a number on the psyche over time. And, if you're in a hetero marriage and trying to come to grips with your homosexuality, it's really tough.
