Some environments will always be less gay-friendly/tolerant than the others. In many male-mostly/only environments, policing the other guys' sexuality becomes almost everyone's fav pastime.
Heterosexuality is a very fragile concept. In the absence of regular dating possibilities, men have little means of demonstrating their heterosexuality, and by default, everyone is under the suspicion of being gay. So, guys go around posting pin up girls all over the place, and exchanging or watching lesbian sex movies. (Straight movies are not too good, since you get to see other dudes' tools, and that alone is already deemed suspicious, too.)
Fortunately, the tide is changing. I have heard a few younger str8 men saying that they have a few gay friends. Nope, they are not afraid of being perceived as being guilty by association, as used to be the case in the past. Quite on the contrary, they are saying that they are so comfortable with their sexuality that they could not care less what the others may think.
