Several others are cheaper and farther away. But you avoid all the sleazy places and the price isn't prohibitive.

Hotel San Nicolas...Ave Madero and Calle Segunda...about 30 dollars a night, safe, color TV, hot water....the place is gay-owned and on the same block as a gay bar called Bobis.
