The quickest (and most expensive) way to get there is to hire a taxi outside your hotel. A slower, cheaper way to get there is to take the BTS to Ekkamai and get in the bus. It's air conditioned, and a bus leaves the station every 20-30 minutes.
However, having said all of that, you should know that ALL of the major roads between BKK and Pattaya are torn up and traffic is usually HORRIBLE all the way there...and back. So, it's difficult to tell you how long it will take. But, I'd venture to say you'd spend a LOT more time coming and going than you will on the beach.

I took a taxi today from Silom to Jomtien. My driver thought he was Stirling Moss when the road was clear, but with all the road works and trucks going to Laem Chabang it still took 2 hrs 30 mins. I'd recommend an overnite stay...plus what's the point doing a day trip and missing the fun in Boystown at nite ?

A BKK taxi will cost about Bht 1,600 plus tolls of Bht 130. (They'll ask for 2,000 but dig in at 1,600) I use a Pattaya based private taxi co who charge Bht 1,200 inc tolls. email: keak_vt@hotmail.com. Book a few days in advance and they're very reliable.
There is a "van" (private bus) straight to Suvarnabhumi from Jomtien for about 150 Bt but I dont know if they offer one to BKK. Hope this helps
