Can someone give some insight into where all these people get money to live on? Or are they all retired people with a lot of social security and other income (and savings)? I never understood how all the younger farangs live in Thailand. If they have jobs, how much can they make, and what kinds of jobs? I think that at least in the U.S., many people have lost a lot of money and can't support their idle children living overseas. And how much welfare can a young unemployed European get from the State?

From this web page;
http://www.udonmap.com/udonthanimaga...animap41_1.jpg you can see a map of Udon. In square N8, you will see 69 Motel. That is discreet and almost next door to Boyzone on Phon Phisai Road. Gentle is in square O10 and Bandung is in square K12 (very near to what is shown on the map as Boy Boy Pub, but in fact doesn't exist any more there. There is a bar in square M12 called something like Man Bar, but not sure if it's really gay or more for women. 69 Motel is not boutique but is short time place for about Bht300 and has mirrors on the ceilings and fancy bathrooms. I usualy stay at a hotel on the corner near Robinsons/Central at square O12...it has no name on the map. I like it because it has parking available in front, costs Bht350 a night for aircon room and they don't give a damn who goes in with you. There is a faland restaurant and bar next door called Mojos that is good for all meals. This is a low-key girlie bar and very convenient. All these places are an easy walk from the main aircon bus terminal and train station. I am afraid I can't help with boutique...not really my style.

Going probably in the next month or two. Actually it is a stop to Vientiane. I plan on deplaning at Udon, and spend a few days either in Udon or Nongkhai. Anyone has advice on which one is better. It seems for the "straight" tourist it's a no-brainer -- of course Nongkhai is more attractive. But how about the "gay tourist"?

Well, because Udorn is a relatively big city with a developed nightlife scene going back to the Vietnam era, when US airmen were stationed there.
In comparison, Nongkhai is just a backwater town whose streets roll up early. Posted via Mobile Device

Quite correct Icon. I just spent the weekend there. It's a great city from so many points of view. I believe my recent post in the thread earlier points out many.
I spent most of my time with a lad i had met a month or so back in Central. They are building a new, larger Central opposite. They also have a new dining area down near the train station. It is also a city you can do on foot mostly.

I will do some later today...but just a note about the "scene". I would not go there just for sex. But if you are in the area or know someone from a previous visit or GayRomeo it's great. But there are some places that are good from time to time....like Bandung and Gentle. The cruising at Central(ex- Robinsons) is sometimes very rewarding. But what I like about the place is the availability of restaurants selling international food and decent breakfasts at great prices. In places it resembles very low-key spots in Pattaya. The area is also surrounded by interesting places that are very rural. Getting there is a breeze by air, luxury bus or train. Several car rental places at the airport also..Budget, Avis plus some local ones.
