I've sat in Vassa once (not more than 15 minutes) and looked in a couple of times more. For what it's worth, my impression is that Vassa has no "type". In other words, despite having fewer than 10 boys, these ten tended to be highly variable, from fresh-looking twinks to motorcy drivers seeking career change.

What I intuit is that the mamasan is trying not to confine herself to any type for the bar, hoping to satisfy as many customers a possible (but given the tiny total number, probably satisfying none).

My guess is that the tiny total makes the bar highly vulnerable to fluctuations. If it has, for example, only two small twinks in its stable, and on one night, one is off'd while the other does not show up for work, then a customer of that night might say "This bar has no twinks!".

And vice versa. If both its leathery roughnecks have to go back to the village to help with rice planting, another customer will report "This bar has only twinks and muscle marys, where are the street thugs or sinewy farm hands that I like?"

Of course, I am only speculating. It may also be that there have been periodic changes in mamasans, each of whom has her own idea of "marketable type".

My Lord & Master is in residence for at least a couple of weeks so "poking my nose into joints" will have to wait until he departs for bucolic pursuits to the north.

I have to admit that geography and other factors cause me to prefer Sunnee, but I guess a little exploring is sometimes rewarding. Might even pass through Wild West Boys which I've heard is on the block because of poor cash flow issues.

In the meantime maybe some other intrepid reporters can give both places a "look-see" and post their observations.
