are you sure about the 1000 baht for short time in pattaya? when i offed a very senior guy in boyzboyzboyz and the only non-anorexic in krazy dragon - they asked for 1500 plus "taxi" fare after the deed.

the other bar in boyztown which has older guys commanded 2000 and off fee was 400.

Wantasian - I don't think tourism is down. Indications from the 3rd quarter are that it is up on last year. But please do not equate "tourism" with farang visitors. Tourism into Thailand is now majority Asian. Farang numbers may be flat or down, but tourist numbers can well be up. The problem I have long pointed out is that the gogo bar business has been failing to adjust to Asian tastes in entertainment and boy appeal. And failing to keep themselves fresh generally; shows have remained the same for ages.

Thailand is not just an agricultural country. It is now a large exporter of manufactured goods, including motor vehicles. One of these days, if it has not already, it will produce more cars than Detroit. It's time to stop seeing Thailand as some rural backwater with cost structures of a subsistence economy, and see it instead as a developing and industrialising country with a steadily rising standard of living.

Sydneyboy and biggles69 - I don't think the selection of boys in Pattayaland is much different from the Bangkok gogo bars. Sunee is a wierd case in itself. As for which bars have cute boys, it depends on one's taste. Personally, Sunee anorexia and queeniness is not for me, but it obviously gets the heart pumping in others. Some consider the Bangkok barboys too old, but the fact that they're there will tell you that there is a market for them. I suspect it's the Asian market - they prefer older, beefier more manly guys.

What they ask for and what they get are two separate things.

The boys on Gayromeo will often ask for 2000. I offer 1000 plus 100 THB for transport. They often call again for refills.

I never go to Soi Twilight anymore, but lads from other areas get 1000 - 1500 depending on a variety of factors. Many will call for repeat visits as well.

I do not agree that Pattaya has the dregs and Bangkok the beauties. For me it is the other way around. There's no accounting for taste.

I dont go for "older" guys. 1,000 bht very acceptable to most guys short time (plus taxi home if they are not staying the night.) At night if they haven't eaten i will gladly shout them a take away etc.

Maybe not in 2010, but definitely not as long ago as 1990. Bht 1,000 was customary less than 10 years ago.

I said the baht's value "internationally," which means "against other currencies." Which means that imported goods in Thailand aren't getting much more expensive, because the baht isn't shrinking in international value. The cost of imported goods is part of the Thai cost of living.

I don't see the cost of imported goods getting any cheaper. Inflation is not slowing that I'm aware of -- and that's all that matters to a local person.

2000 was ten years ago...back when some of these guys were eight years old. What worked then doesn't work now.

Inflation is currently 3.6% according to bank of thailand data.

I disagree that the cost of imported goods is part of the thai cost of living, except of course oil.

The thai baht has been floating to some extent for a few years, however it is still to some extent linked to the US$ rather than floating freely against all international currencies.

agree with ICON, can't see how "the baht's buying power overseas" is conected.

Can't see how any argument about when 1,000 became unnacepatable is relevant or producive in this discussion.

The ultimate point is very sraight forward; working men cannot survive any more, at least in Bangkok, and I suspect the same is true of Pattaya (which is also an expensive place to live and survice for Thais) on 1,000Baht tips.

Rent for even a quite small room is now super expensive, pushing people to live further and further out of the city, travelling late at night is very expensive for Thais. A simple bowl of noodles is double price to what is was perhaps 5 years ago. Plenty of working men are supporting families and children, although education supposed to be free, the cash costs are enormous. Kids buying lunch at school is typically 25 - 35 Baht.

1,000Baht is gone is 5 minutes.

Ocean Boys Grand Opening

Apologies for an error in my earlier message #37. Ocean Boys' Grand Opening is this Sunday 19 Dec, not 18 Dec as reported earlier.

Also, Dream Boy and Boys Bangkok are celebrating their 11th anniversary this Friday 17 Dec.

Off tips in Bangkok

While I agree that 1000 as tips for service from gogo boys in Bangkok is too low, and while I understand the costs-rationale for 1500 as the minimum, my last two times when I gave 1300 for so-so performance were received without demurral. This is partly why I had said earlier that I'm not sure that the minimum has really reached 1500 yet.

Then again, a sample size of two isn't altogether convincing, so I may have a mistaken notion of the market.

Another indicator is how much massage boys expect for 60 min or 90 min of work. The massage parlours themselves usually indicate 1000 as the minimum should sex be involved, and I find myself paying in the 1000 - 1300 range of tips. In my mind, if the boy bottoms, he might earn 1500, but since I almost never want to penetrate in that kind of setting, this pay-out would be unusual.

Empirical data from Pattaya - today.

Happy Boys .. lots of happy, horny boys. Handsome 19 y.o quickly invites me upstairs. No other customers there - he's out of his pants in a flash, naked and hard as a rock and after a few minutes of sucking and jerking he shoots all over my face and chest. 500 bt tip accepted with big smile - no bar charge.

We descent to main bar to enjoy a drink - joined by 2nd 19 y/o I've previously offed. He soon suggests party - all agree so 3 of us head for View Talay condos. All shower together, vigorous 3 way session follows - big loads shot all round, another beer together, 1,000 bt tip to each and 100bt for their taxi back. Hugs and kisses all round and request to meet again.

There is NO WAY that would happen in BKK - at those prices, with cute guys who can actually get a hard on and shoot a load - (or 2) and are fun to be with and enjoy sex.

I rest my case

What is "super expensive" for a small room? I don't see how 1000 baht is gone in no time. I was under the impression that a small room costs less than 3000 baht a month.

Biggles, that's a great report. I wish I had been there...just to watch of course. I often wonder why the Happy Boys format, set apart from the rest of Sunee and with the upstairs romper room, isn't duplicated at other places. It seems clear that boys will not demand unreasonable tips if they are happy in their work....Biggles has never demanded a tip from me.

How could 1000baht be gone in 5 minutes, unless the man spends it with his friends on alcohol. I have seen it often enough in discos & bars frequented by bar boys.
Pattaya bar boys who have online profiles in gay sites are quite willing to give you a late afternoon visit for 1000baht or less, before they start reporting for work. It is a good alternative to visiting bars, provided that you like sex in the afternoon.

opinions

A wide range of opinions here. There is no doubt that the cost of living has risen in Bangkok this past decade, but claims such as the price of noodles has doubled in the past 5 years are nonsense. Despite inflation, most Thais are able to deal with rising prices. Take renting an apartment, for example. As someone noted, many places can be found for 3,000 per baht, or less, per month. And normally several friends live together in these places, or the young man may still live with family. The fact is that 1,000 baht per day CAN still go a long way. I pay more than I used to do for my regular visitors, but I think it's foolish to determine the price we pay in baht by the raising/falling exchange rate of foreign currencies. Be fair and pay the guy for his services (or lack of), but don't feel like you need to be handing about 2,000 baht everytime someone comes over. Personally, I think the bars have lost the plot and are charging much too much for drinks and off fees. Business is bad, tourism is down (and I think these claims of tourism being this year UP are very dubious) and yet the clueless bar owners keep raising prices. That reminds me: when was the last time I visited a bar in Bangkok?
