KY is horrible. It dries up fast and I think the whole idea is to make you use more and more of the stuff. I like to use something a bit more controversial -- massage oil. No special tools needed just buy an enema bottle at your local drug store and some baby oil or massage oil there. I too have had no problems with guys having their condoms fall apart from the oil. In regards to the lubricant, I would recommend one of the silicone based ones. They are more durable, a little spit and they slick back up. In regards to massage oils, it is petroleum products that pose a danger with condom durability. While they will not dissolve away the condom, they can weaken it to the point of breakage. Check the ingredients. I would advise staying away from petroleum based products. Luckily better massage oils do not contain petroleum.

I am sure it is different for everyone - but don't make a final judgment based on your first time.
