The Pioneer Club, a disco in Yangon, attracts a mixed crowd. And there is outdoor cruising at night -- some of it money boys -- on the elevated footbridge at the corner of Shwedagon Pagoda Road and Mahabandoola Street.

Yes, I chatted to a former Air Mandalay steward on that elevated footbridge a few months ago. I recoiled in 'shock horror' when he told me that most there were 'male prostitutes'.

hotels in Myanmar

I was in Myanmar earlier this year and loved it. Found the outside cruising scene in Yangon on my very last day in town. Seems to be hit and miss: I walked the same streets earlier in the week and didn't see, or get offered, anything at all. Stayed at a hotel in Yangon called City Star that didn't mind guests/visitors to my room. What about Mandalay? I plan on going there later in the year but would like a hotel recommendation if anybody has been there. I'd prefer something in the $20-30 range. I don't want a cheap guesthouse but I also don't want a ritzy place either. I'd rather spend my extra money on "entertainment" or a good meal.

Depends where in town you want to be. The main hotel area is well east of the centre and personally I prefer to be closer to town. You might try the Zegyo Hotel (I've stayed in the bungalows on the roof!) or the Pacific Hotel which is the other side of the railway station. As it's name suggests the Zegyo is opposite the Zegyo (market)

A little more expensive, and it's a new place where I have not stayed, is the Mandalay City Hotel. Not quite as central as the Zegyo Hotel.

For laos it is worth checking out sites like face-pic and gaydar.co.uk and making contact with some of the guys before you go.

In Vientianne - Chess cafe has closed. Night clubs like Marina always have some gay guys around. The Mandarina Massage place on right hand side of road between Laos Plaza Hotel and the square with the fountain has 3 or 4 guys (not always visible) you get a hand job and often can suck the guy. Occasionally get a couple of guys cruising at the fountain square (nice Crepe place just before the square - if you sit on the upstairs balcony can check out if any one is cruising - or chat up the waiters). The large bar on far right hand side of the square has many cute waiters that should know if any action. Otherwise along river front at or after dusk and the main road there making eye contact sometimes has results. Have had guys on motorbikes stop and ask me. But it is all luck on the day and how patient you want to be.

But internet is best.

Another tip I use when travelling is always specifically request a younger male guide as find it easier to ask them questions about night entertainment than female ones - obviously.

Wieng Chan

The most popular club in Wieng Chan (Vientiane) now is Kok. Any tuk-tuk driver will know where it is. It is a five to ten minutes ride from the fountain area.

Also, the BBQ place next to the fountain is all packed with farangs, both expatriates and back packers, and consequently attracts the young male (and female) crowd. Just sit by the bar and relax, and the boys will come to you.

And of course, www.face-pic.com is a good bet.

Face-pic also has a lot of Myanmar guys, but my contacts never turned up at appointments. That is my experience.

Good luck.

Vientiane

When I was in Vientiane last year, I found the Spider Beer Garden to be very cruisy. Mixed crowd, but there were definite possibilities there. It's not in the center of the city but west of town. The friendly manager at the Dragon Lodge (a nice gay-owned hotel/guesthouse in Vientiane) can give you directions to Spider and tips on the other places to go.

Wieng Chan II

Dragon (or drag on) Lodge in Wieng Chan is also a nice place to stay. They do however charge a joiners fee of USD 3.00.

Yangon

I was in Myanmar last week. Found some action in Yangon but not a single bite in Mandalay. In Yangon you can find evening cruising near the Lion's World bar/restaurant, which is located on the corner of Anawrahta Road and Shwedagon Pagoda Road. It's just west of the Sule Paya pagoda. The guys usually hang out on the foot bridge/flyover that connects the upstairs Lion's World to the other side of the street. These guys all appear to be commercial freelancers, so don't expect free treats! Most appear to be legal age. also lots of cute young men and teens working in local restaurants and tea shops in both Yangon and Mandalay. Not sure of their availibility or interest level in hanging out with foreigners, however. One local guy took me to an outdoor amusement park with a swimming pool and slides (sorry, can't remember the name right now!) and it was packed with good looking guys (about 90% of the crowd was male; teens to 20s). I wanted to ditch the guy I was with and make some new friends by the pool! The people in Myanmar are friendly and delightful. Cruising scene or not, I'll be back.
