I'm going to be in Tokyo soon and would like to know if anyone can help me out with cruising and/or saunas in the Ikebukuro section. I've found this map from the website of a popular hotel that I'm probably going to be staying at.

If you know Tokyo, then you probably know this area. I'm not that all familiar with Tokyo, but I'd like to come back with some stories!!

Tokyo November 2005 - I used the 3 different 24 Kaikan Saunas and had great fun.

Just check your shoes first at the entrance!

Yep, 24 Kaikan is the place for you. The one in Shinjuku is the best, in my opinion. This topic was covered a while ago...pick up a copy of the Time Out Guide to Tokyo here in Thailand before you go. There's a map in there, and it explains how the system works.

Basically, take your shoes off before going inside. Choose a locker to put your shoes in, insert a 10 yen coin to lock the door, and remove the key.

Then go to the automated ticket vending machine. Push the button for general admission, which costs 26,000 yen. Put your bills in the slot and take the ticket that comes out to the counter right behind you. Give them the ticket and your shoe locker key, and they will give you a bag containing towels and robe, and another key for a clothing locker inside.

You'll figure out the rest!

There is a very comprehensive thread going re Tokyo already with info from icon,fountainhall and others.Look up stickyrice.com and there is a travel review for Tokyo and is very helpful.See also Fridae.com left hand column for Asian cities guide.

I am in Tokyo now and the 24 hr Shinjuku sauna is recommended.All types cute,hunky and fat and very busy after 8.It has unique amenities,doubt there is another like it globally.I struck gold there first night.Reasonable 2nd time too.Not all guys are into westerners though.

The bars around Shinjuku are more youth oriented but worth a stroll and very open porn shops there too.The area has a buzz and do walk around the rabbit-warren side streets.

Adding to my above post since April you have to take passport to Sauna 24.It is classified as a hotel (you can hire rooms there).So don't travel across the city and be disappointed.

Fountainhall's direction on how to get to Lornstar hotel on other Tokyo thread is also valid for Shinjuku gay area.Cut and paste that with stickyrice.com (tokyo travel review)and you will easily piece together directions to Sauna 24.

You might like to also print Lornstar Hotel's direction map from their website.It will lead you very close to the centre of activity as this hotel is right on the edge of it.

Last time I was at 24 I was told a photocopy of the photo and ID details in my passport would be OK in future.

Based on experience, can any of you recommend any of the 24 Kaikans in particular?
I've been to the Ueno one twice in the late 1990's (and many saunas in Fukuoka, where I used to live), and it was OK--but as a foreigner, it limits who I get to play with (much more than in Thai saunas, I've found).

Have you found Shinjuku's 24 Kaikan better than Ueno in that regard? I'll be in Tokyo this weekend, the 30th to the 2nd.

Sorry guys,there is no guarantee anywhere, so much for in particular!

I did it my way in Japan back from 1983 and there are much less "steam places" now around and with regard to Tokyo 24 Kaikan are the only 3 t be recommended.

I, in particular loved 2005 Ueno most, Shinjuku served more to the after mid night crowd, also due to the position.

The third one hidden behind the tempel got a bit filthy by now.

Well, I'm back from my trip to Tokyo and I have to say that I lucked out with a sauna close to my hotel. Only a 5 minute walk away was Jinya in Ikebukuro.
