Smile Infomation on Myanmar

With all the great information on the Philippines, I was hoping I could benefit from the many posters’ experiences. I have a trip planned in January for Myanmar. A friend said that Myanmar today, is like Thailand was 20 years ago. I understand meeting young men is primarily done on the streets. Any useful information or tips would be greatly appreciated. Hotel or guesthouse recommendations are also very welcome. Thanks.

likely too late for you, but perhaps for others:
also see the more critical listing in utopia-asia.com
Was myself 1 week there late nov, mainly to see what its like and if warrant a longer visit. some scnes from that week:
1.taxi from airport into town, shared. Driver eager to show english and knowledge (main prize is a week rental to tour around, paid in $$): about the sarong=longyi: predictable answer about choosing the one for the other sex, but added: we chase them, throw stones at them, spuck at them...
2.in Kyaktyo+golden rock, a famous spot, truck downstairs, filled to the brim. sat between a group of young cityboys (in fact first feared some pickpocketing trial); boy beside me was hissed on by the other behind, the word sexy fell. As the truck gets down the mountain anyone sways around in close encounters, more laughs and gropes.
3.back in Yangon, a cheap beerplace: ate rice, tables shared. Later sat a couple opposite: older man, young boy, jeans, earring, painted hair. They ordered same plate as me, some ''negotiations'' followed, man hinted at me that I was likely of same club. did not follow up.
4.walked along that ''bar/hairsalon'' mainly chased after by some 5 Indians with childs in arm and begging. At that bar a group of katoeys, local style, screaming out.
Now my first visit to this now chilly Thailand was some 20 yrs ago: at that time you were wel advised to visit bars and choose boys from there, like Apollo in soi 4/ I think club Rome was already open, as was Super Lek Matsuda and BarBiery. So Myanmar is not BKK of 20 yrs ago.
All in all more reminder of Indonesia (no, not the Bali you may know if youve been there at all), but like Sumatera, incl the awful food: their idea of nasi padang, sitting for 3 days in the blazing sun till consumption comes.

changes

I just got back from a trip to Myanmar this week. A few disturbing changes in Yangon. The hotel I used previously will no longer allow boys to come to the room. And I'm not talking about anything dangerously young; the guy I met last time is 18 and will be 19 soon. Six months ago, no problem getting him to come to the room, but now a definite "cannnot." I tried 4 different hotels and it was the same thing in each one. One place even told me: "Lady, no problem, but no boys." I wonder what that's all about?
But the rest of the country remains very charming and different. In some ways, I would guess it's like Thailand was about 50 years ago (20 years is too recent!). But forget about any thriving bar scene. That just doesn't exist. All the guys you meet are either freelancers on the street, or hanging out in some overpriced hotel karaoke bar or disco. Sadly, hip-hop culture is being embraced by rich youngsters. Lock your doors and hide your kids: Burmese Rap is here!
I still consider Myanmar to a "must" see place. Wonderful people, inexpensive, great sights to see, and very safe. And the food isn't bad at all. In fact, I had some wonderful meals; cuisine ranging from Burmese and Shan, to Indian and Chinese, even Italian and Thai. And the local teashops have great tea and snacks (samosa, paratha, pastries), even full meals (noodles dishes, fried rice, etc.)
At a monastary near Inle Lake I met a VERY friendly young monk. Instant eye contact and big smiles. He came over and sat very close to me, including a bit of touching and hand holding. I kept waiting for his hand to wander further but it never got beyond that, but I could feel the desire (from both of us!). I'll have to suggest a long walk in the woods next time!

Myanmar

Also returned from Myanmar.Sad how mismanagement has held a country back for so long and despite the smiles there is a seething resentment among Burmese about their situation
Gay life so hard access.Did meet with a lad at Lion Bar and got him into my pricey hotel during the day. Though one gets smiles and good eye contact people are generally shy. English is really only spoken well by the educated (few) and those in tourist game.
Bottom line is that if you are looking for encounters then forget Myanmar....it is too much like work!

Oh and sorry to disagree but generally the food is crap unless you pay up. Grease and oil predominate. Worst food in Asia I would say

food and karaoke

Yeah, close encounters of the happy kind are a bit like work in Myanmar. But surprises can happen. Having failed at a hotel, I took my latest find to a karaoke place. The private booths are handy!
As for the food in Myanmar, the quality doesn't rival Thai or Lao, but I really was surprised at how many good restaurants there are there. It's not all greasy and oily. The worst food in Asia - by far - in my opinion, is the food in Cambodia. Very boring and bland.
