S Total Ban On Smoking ... !

-- According to an article in today's 'BKK. Post.' today - 11 feb 08.- marks the start of a total ban on smoking in pubs. and clubs.
- This ban covers all air-cond. bars, cafes., clubs & discos..
- Owners of outdoors' restaurants and markets are req'd. to designate separate 'Smoking.' and 'Non-smoking.' spaces.
- An MOH. spokesperson said that initially educational warnings, rather than fines, would be given - but only until 31 may 08..

-- For me, as a non-smoker of ciggies. etc., this ban is good news. Even after eating in 'DICK'S CAFE.', (Soi Twilight.), wch. is fairly smoking free, my clothes smell of nicotine.

-- One hopes that this 'total ban.' applies to only cigarettes and to other nicotinaceous products?

This is the greatest thing to happen in Thailand since the introduction of the metered taxi.

Gaijin 14th February 2008 10:09 AM

Stopped by both Solid and Nature tonight....was pleasantly surprised that both were smoke free....the boys actually put on shorts and t-shirts to step out of a smoke.

bababobo 14th February 2008 11:38 PM

So was Dj and all the bars on Soi 2 last night. Really wonderful.
But sitting outside on the soi too it was terrible, just like a smoke factory!

brief encounter 15th February 2008 07:51 PM

Great news about non-smoking venues. Will this law continue to be adhered to or like some decrees and legislation be ignored after initial stages in Thailand ?

icon513 15th February 2008 08:28 PM

Same thing people said when the no smoking in restaurants law came out. That one stuck, so here's hoping this one will, too.

brief encounter 15th February 2008 09:45 PM

Globally venues are now adding smoking annexes, usually outdoors,to retain die-hard gaspers as the pro-smoking lobby accepts the situation as fait accompli.Already in Australia statistics show a decline in the lethal habit since the prohibition and hard core 'quit' advertising.

At Telephone Bar a couple of years ago a barman was of the opinion that it was very entrenched as a way of life over Asia and this would be the main difficulty.Hope the law is adhered to in the almost anything-goes atmosphere of the go-go bars.

icon513 15th February 2008 11:18 PM

No more entrenched here than it was in Italy and France, which are now smoke-free. The addicts will have to learn to cope.

Still Smoking

I was in Hot Male last night (Friday) and it was initially smoke free and a very refreshing change from previous visits. During the show a group of women(?) came in and lit up. Ash trays were quickly produced, and no effort was made to stop them smoking, although the well endowed top in the bold show did seem to say to them "no smoking"!! None of the boys were smoking in either bar though.

The same thing happened a little later in ScrewBoy bar. A British guy came in and lit up. I complained to the Mamasan and he shrugged his shoulders indicated I should move around a little.

No Smoking signs were not particularly prominent and I guess the bars have to put more effort in making sure that visitors are aware of the ban.

Earlier Solid was refreshingly smoke free.

But did the boys at Nature Boy still smoke you?

They had to go outside to smoke, as previously explained. [Ha ha]

As a matter of fact, one of them did.

fountainhall 17th February 2008 09:25 PM

Made a first visit to a new bar opposite Nature Boys last night. Half the ten or so boys were smoking (cigarettes!), as were some of the staff!

icon513 17th February 2008 09:40 PM

I expect things will change once they start handing out 20,000 baht fines. Or when someone reports them to the authorities. I think there's a snitch line you can call.

Was there a time when women were not allowed ? I can't see how it would detract from the bar.It reminds you the guys are actually straight. If it was a gay venue and tourists were coming to gawk that would be another matter.

billinbkk 18th February 2008 09:46 PM

Speaking about straight bar boys....

I was in Boys BKK the other night for the 10.15 show. The place was totally smoke free with LOTS of signs posted everywhere announcing "NO SMOKING". But, I can't begin to tell you how pathetic it was to sit there and watch six totally straight guys try to do the fucking show. NONE of them was interested in doing the show at all....and it showed.

-- Probably there wasn't any such time when wimmen were not allowed in - possibly more of an unwritten rule that wimmen, unless they were hardened old harridans, did not go to such places. In my score or so years of cuming to BKK. this spectacle of wimmin in a go-go bars is of fairly recent origin.
- 'JUPITER LOUNGE BAR.',(by S'wongse. Htl.'.), charges wimmen a premium to enter - I believe?
- But aren't Soi Twilight's a go-go bars g*y venues? The fact that many, if not most of the performers, may be straight doesn't detract from the fact that most of the acts are homos*x**l in content, does it?
- Are normal/straight people, both men & women, really interested-in/turned-on by seeing men f*ck*ng men? :o

Obviously, they are. More of a circus sideshow than anything erotic. Actually, that's the way I feel about those shows, as well.

-- Agreed - erotic they are not!
- But not so sure about linking them to circus sideshows, wch. are usually more of a family e'tainment., aren't they? But maybe they are more like the freak shows one used to see behind closed curtains?

brief encounter 19th February 2008 06:36 PM

Twilight is ever evolving it seems. The women don't seem to mind what the guys do to each other I suspect as they often off them and many a boy has had the fortune to squire a wealthy Japanese around for a week or so.I understand Japanese teens particularly have a curiosity about the variety of male activities. The enjoyment of ogling male flesh and merely treating sex as a diverting hobby most likely can be traced back to the emergence of the Spice Girls era of fun and freedom that matched the lack of inhibition lads had. What "normal" straights think I don't know, they probably don't stay.Depends on appetite.Myself,I would watch straight sex if the people were attractive.

Its a new, fluid world now and the uptight, kamp, mysogynist is a throwback.

I only have another half score experience but I can recall women coming in to Twilight during all that time (although not sure about other bars). True, they used to sit more on the benches at the back rather than joining us lechers by the bar. But they were definitely there (and most were not ladyboys).

This is definitely true nowadays. Japanese women have a fascination with well-endowed Thai guys and are happy to lash out a fortune in Baht for a week of fun. After all, in Japan just one night with a young host from a trendy ladies club will cost them well over US$500 PLUS tip!

-- Judging from the few boyz whom I've 'Offed.' from the Soi Twilight a go-go bars, once away from their vacuum pumps and other aids not all that many of them are that better-endowed than average, (avg., I'd say, is about 5ins. LOA.), - despite what one may have seen earlier on the stage.
- Are male hosts in BKK's. ladies' clubs better endowed, better performers or generally better all-round than those whom we see in Soi T'light.?
-- bibi.. --

icon513 20th February 2008 02:19 AM

Women have always been welcome in Bangkok's male go-go and host bars. As early as 1990, I often went out whoring with female friends -- who partook of offs just as enthusiastically as I did.

wowpow 20th February 2008 03:27 AM

Females welcome - well not everywhere. Certainly Tawan Bar used to charge women three times the normal drink price, then a reduce to double and now I think it's the same. I think that the old Jupiter and Blue Star charged double.

It seems it's history now and that all male go-go bars welcome mixed groups and all women groups. After all they are commercial male go-go bars and not gay bars.

Most times they don't bother me much. I certainly would prefer to have women in bars than smokers.

I have compiled a list of bars obeying the new no smoking laws at

Shows my total ignorance - I never realised there were ladies clubs in BKK! Even so, from my limited knowledge of young Japanese ladies (I lived in Japan for a few years), I know that in groups they will get a thrill out of attending a male go-go bar here. And compared to the average Japanese appendage, most Thai guys offer at least the promise of something more exciting.

brief encounter 22nd February 2008 07:30 PM

Would agree that Thai guys rate highly in the battle of the bulge.Japanese guys hold no big surprises and I saw many naked men using onsens there. One of the Bkk performers revealed to me that the only assistance they gave nature was to cut the elastic opening end of a condom off and roll it on the base of the erection to hold it while doing a big cock show.Doubtful that vacuum pumps are used very much due to unnecessary financial outlay and even availabiltiy in Bangkok. The naturally hung gravitate to the big cock show and the turnover is rapid.

btw Where are these escort bars for females in Bkk ?I know older women travel to parts of Africa for gigilos and hustlers in Bali but did not realise that there were venues set up here. There would be a big shift in personnel .

I'd put the Skytrain as a much higher achievement.

skytrain

The Skytrain is dandy if you're one of the small fraction of Thais who benefit from it. I'd wager, though, that less than 2% of the overall population has ever set foot on it, much less use it regularly. I've only been on it maybe a dozen times over the years.

women in bars need a new thread

so we can keep this thread on topic.

hcmpp 25th February 2008 08:25 AM

skytrain

Well at peak hours you can not get any more of the Thai or farang population on the trains. At Nana you often have to let a train go through without getting on at 7.30am. At Siam you often have to wait for the second train. At Saladeng at 6pm you often can not get on the first train. Even at weekends they are quite crowded. I hope if they are going to extend the Sukhumvit line they make the trains longer otherwise no chance of getting on the train at all at Nana. Only compensating part is if you get crushed up against some nice twink. Also options for good eye contact - handsome guys in their shirt and ties.

billinbkk 1st March 2008 06:20 PM

Meanwhile....back on topic....

I have a friend visiting, so have been to most of the bars within the past week. Clearly, the smoking ban memo has NOT reached Classic Boys. Everything was fine in there last night until they unloaded a bus full of Japanese tourists. As soon as they were in, the ash trays appeared and the place immediately fogged from the entire lot of them puffing away. As they smoked, even the bar boys began smoking. We complained to the management, but it was clearly a case of the two of us vs. the bus-load of them....and they won.

TopmanUK 29th March 2008 11:24 PM

Patong/Phuket

No one seems to take any notice of the smoking ban here. Customers/ bar boys and staff all seem to be smoking and you come out smelling like an ash tray. I havent seen one No Smoking sign in any of the bars.

sextile 30th March 2008 08:13 AM

-- Last night, (sat.), my Fils'. friend and I were in 'HOTMALE BAR.', (Soi Twilight.),.
- I did not see any ash-trays put-out for customers' use; but during the course of the evening a woman and some other man smoked a ciggie. each - no-one seemed to mind.:(

brief encounter 30th April 2008 08:17 PM

What compliance is this no-smoking law receiving now that a few months have passed ?

Cupidman 1st May 2008 04:04 AM

My friend owns a bar in Rayong and he was told by the police there that they have let a few months go by. But that starting May they will be enforcing it. But that could be like all other proclamations that are made in Thailand. Like corruption being stamped out, traffic improved and Thailand becoming a 1st world country by...Ummm, 2 years ago :P

sextile 10th May 2008 10:17 PM

-- Last night, (sat.), went in to 'FRESH BEACH BOYS.', (Soi Twilight.).
- I did not see any ash-trays put-out nor did I notice anyone smoking ciggies.; MORE to the point, when undressing back in my room I noticed that my shirt didn't smell of nicotine as it would have done in the times before the ban on smoking.
-- bibi.. --

futuremeet 11th May 2008 09:17 PM

I went to DJ Station several times last week and, as a non-smoker myself, I was delighted that no-one was smoking inside the place. It made the night so much more enjoyable for me and didn't seem to have spoilt the atmosphere in any way, in fact I found it easier to talk to guys without having to deal with the choking smoke!

I had previously been there last December and the contrast with the, by then, smoke-free UK was dreadful. I'm so impressed that Thailand has had the sense to do this.

sextile 25th May 2008 01:49 AM

-- Y'day., (sat.), evening I went to 'FUTURE BOYS.' for their 22.hrs. perf..
- I noted that ash-trays were provided, although I saw only a couple of spectators who were smoking ciggies. - there was MORE 'smoking.' on stage - ha!

buzzard 5th June 2008 09:23 AM

I'm not expecting much in the way of consistent enforcement of the no-smoking law. When you look around town and see all the bootleg computer software, DVDs, CDs and other crap, it's hard to think that this new "law" will become widespread. I HOPE that it does, but I'm skeptical.
