S Total Ban On Smoking ... !

-- According to an article in today's 'BKK. Post.' today - 11 feb 08.- marks the start of a total ban on smoking in pubs. and clubs.
- This ban covers all air-cond. bars, cafes., clubs & discos..
- Owners of outdoors' restaurants and markets are req'd. to designate separate 'Smoking.' and 'Non-smoking.' spaces.
- An MOH. spokesperson said that initially educational warnings, rather than fines, would be given - but only until 31 may 08..

-- For me, as a non-smoker of ciggies. etc., this ban is good news. Even after eating in 'DICK'S CAFE.', (Soi Twilight.), wch. is fairly smoking free, my clothes smell of nicotine.

-- One hopes that this 'total ban.' applies to only cigarettes and to other nicotinaceous products?

This is the greatest thing to happen in Thailand since the introduction of the metered taxi.

Stopped by both Solid and Nature tonight....was pleasantly surprised that both were smoke free....the boys actually put on shorts and t-shirts to step out of a smoke.

So was Dj and all the bars on Soi 2 last night. Really wonderful.
But sitting outside on the soi too it was terrible, just like a smoke factory!

Thumbs up

Great news about non-smoking venues. Will this law continue to be adhered to or like some decrees and legislation be ignored after initial stages in Thailand ?

Same thing people said when the no smoking in restaurants law came out. That one stuck, so here's hoping this one will, too.

Globally venues are now adding smoking annexes, usually outdoors,to retain die-hard gaspers as the pro-smoking lobby accepts the situation as fait accompli.Already in Australia statistics show a decline in the lethal habit since the prohibition and hard core 'quit' advertising.

At Telephone Bar a couple of years ago a barman was of the opinion that it was very entrenched as a way of life over Asia and this would be the main difficulty.Hope the law is adhered to in the almost anything-goes atmosphere of the go-go bars.

No more entrenched here than it was in Italy and France, which are now smoke-free. The addicts will have to learn to cope.

Angry Still Smoking

I was in Hot Male last night (Friday) and it was initially smoke free and a very refreshing change from previous visits. During the show a group of women(?) came in and lit up. Ash trays were quickly produced, and no effort was made to stop them smoking, although the well endowed top in the bold show did seem to say to them "no smoking"!! None of the boys were smoking in either bar though.

The same thing happened a little later in ScrewBoy bar. A British guy came in and lit up. I complained to the Mamasan and he shrugged his shoulders indicated I should move around a little.

No Smoking signs were not particularly prominent and I guess the bars have to put more effort in making sure that visitors are aware of the ban.

Earlier Solid was refreshingly smoke free.

Made a first visit to a new bar opposite Nature Boys last night. Half the ten or so boys were smoking (cigarettes!), as were some of the staff!

I expect things will change once they start handing out 20,000 baht fines. Or when someone reports them to the authorities. I think there's a snitch line you can call.
