Since it's possible to transfer validity, as well as credit, between phones, a market has developed. I pay either 50 baht per month or, sometimes, 3 months for 100 baht. Kad Warorot in Chiang Mai is one place where this is on offer, but I'm sure every town/city has many such places.

It seems a small price to pay for continuity of phone number.
