- Actually, should I be obliged to go shopping for groceries etc. then I purchase generally by the piece: so many apples at somuch eachone and suchlike.

-- Sorry, but the answer must be "No." as I do not know you personally.
- All I can suggest is that you use the perceptions that you've been given; should you become aware of anything suspicious then you ask for the bill, pay it, get-up and leave.

I do not understand this. Do I have to be suspicious when they ask me for ID? Why is that?

They apparently ask for ID for Asian customers -- to make sure they are NOT Thai undercover police officers. It shows that something illegal is going on inside (use your imagination).

-- It does not take all that much imagination to realize that it would not be all that difficult for Th. undercover police to produce suitable IDs., does it?

It's not...it's also not difficult for them to recruit foreigners to work undercover.

If you ask you can get expat discount card.
The "Ladies welcome" sign was very much there and was lit last weekend when I was in Pattaya.

Happy Boys or Happy Place?

Be careful not to confuse "Happy Boys" in Sunee Plaza area with "Happy Place" in Pattayaland soi 2. "Happy Place" indeed has a 'Ladies Welcome' sign up in rather permanent looking neon. On Friday night this venue was half full with giggling women, probably amused at the rather odd looking bunch of boys gesturing on the stage. I have never seen a woman in the couple of times I have been to "Happy Boys".

I see this only now-being back in BKk for a day or 2. NO-it may or may not happen-plus that you did not tell what type of bus it was (the all-blue supposed express or the white/orange 2nd l-all main stops. But any bus can be diverted into the depot-for fuelling or you may even need to change.
A much faster (generally) and with the added plus of delivering you at any adres in PTY is the BELLbus from AIRPORT, at the odd hours (7-9-11 etc.). Now that airportrail works, a workable alternative. Book direct at desk at (I think) level -1, 1 up from train, same as airportbuses. NOT the BUSterminal at swampy.
