Travel warning Thailand Police targeting tourist

Hi Guys,

I came across this article about police targeting tourist around Sukumvit and Lumpini area

Travel warning Thailand: Bangkok police accelerate random visitor urine tests, searches, interrogations on western tourists and expats « WoWasis TravelBlog

Anyone in BKK at the moment that can comment on this?

I am getting worried since I will be in Silom in the next couple of weeks. Should I skip BKK and try another city ??

Thanks

That would be a big overreaction, if you ask me.

I have lived in Bangkok for over 25 years and never had it happen to me, never seen it happen, never known anyone to have it happen to.

Has anyone else?

In any case, if you aren't taking drugs there doesn't seem anything to worry about. Additionally, all the reports I've seen have been in relation to the area around Soi Cowboy -- not in or near Silom.

I have lived here for almost 20 years and it has never happened to me either but then I never spend any time in that stretch of Sukhumvit (Thong Lo police station) - at least not at street level, I am usually into a building from a skytrain walkway etc, I have however had 2nd hand reports from others many times over many years - this is not a new issue but the current reports seem more aggressive than before

part of the problem is social media - there have been I think only two or three actual first hand reports that have been quoted in hundreds of blogs and facebook pages that have then been re-"reported" on thousands more blogs and pages etc etc and it thus appears to be a huge problem

I am in SIlom every day and there is nothing like this going on there so don't worry dhg4!

... and in Pattaya if you drive or ride a motorbike, make sure you wear your helmet and carry licence and copy passport / visa, as violations are a steady source of revenue for the cops with foreign tourists amongst the main offenders!
