Advice Please: Sex in Lao

I met a Lao man in Bangkok almost a year ago and we have been together there a few times since. He says I am his number 1 boyfriend and now wants me to visit him at his home in Vientiane. However, when I checked the government web sites I found warnings about how it is illegal for foreigners to have sex with Lao nationals! I was planning to stay with the man at a nice hotel in Vientiane but now I am having second thoughts. Afterall, it would be very obvious to locals if a westerner was sharing a room with a Lao.

Does anyone know how stringent the Lao laws are about this?

I took an Isaan boy to Laos for a week. Stayed in nice hotels in Luang Prabang and Vientiane without any problems. In fact the trip was organised through Purple Dragon who organise gay travel all over Asia. We were met by a (gay) Lao guide for our stay in Lunang Prabang.

However, whether being with a Loa man would be different I can't comment.

To play safe, ask ur friend to meet in Nong Khai or spend the nights there. Nong Khai is less than 30 min fr Vientiane by bus.

There is no need whatsoever to worry about this law.

Some years ago, a Japanese friend had serious problems when he was found spending the night with a Lao girl, to whom he was engaged... but not married. The situation with Lao guys is unlikely to be any different and you should exercise caution. It very much depends on where you stay.

I beg to disagree. In this part of the world, men and women are distinct/different, and the sexes are treated very differently. Men are seen as free and fun-loving while women need to be protected.

people who worry too much should simply stay at home, in a familiar environment. once u step out from the familiar, the world becomes dangerous, where carrying a small bottle of poppers could land u in a max-security prison and sex with a guy leads to a public execution. just stay at home and enjoy reading this board.

... and I beg to differ. It's important that people understand what the legal position is. From many conversations with a Guest House owner it appears that it is against the law to have a local in your room. The government is more than a little puritanical... probably due to R&R during the Vietnam war (and what Paul Theroux had to say in 'The Great Railway Bazaar').

It's a great country, with wonderful people. There's even a discreet 'go go' type bar in Vientiane; a local expat might take you there.

-- My chance conversations with an American GH. owner in V'tiane., he visits BKK. from time-to-time, would agree with Khun BH.;
- However, can a Lao native invite a foreigner back to his/her acc'n. for an o'night. stay?

I used to have no problem at the Lao Plaza hotel having boys back or them arriving and coming to my room. Sometimes they were told that they would need to leave at 11pm - but no one followed up. Seen many Japanese etc taking girls to their rooms. Nearly all (last night went to one that did not) the massage places seem now to be into happy endings if not more. Per an original post of mine - i find they do more than GQ Club which is gay bar and massage. You still have boys cruising around on motorbikes looking for pick ups (got approached twice last night) and then of course all the usual websites. I, personally, dot treat Laos any different to Cambodia or Vietnam.
