Class-action suit filed against Long Beach over stings targeting gay men

Here's a follow-up, Class-action suit filed against Long Beach over stings targeting gay men.
Quote:
...[Rory]Moroney is now named as the lead plaintiff in the class-action suit. At least two dozen other men were arrested by Long Beach police under similar circumstances in 2013 and 2014, court records show. In the suit, [Attorney Bruce] Nickerson said the plaintiff class could grow to include “hundreds of men who have been illegally arrested for violations of California law by the LBPD.

Calls to the Long Beach city attorney’s office seeking comment were not immediately returned.

The suit asks the court to declare the conduct of Long Beach’s vice unit to be a violation of the 4th Amendment, which protects people against unreasonable searches and seizures, and the 14th Amendment, which guarantees equal protection. The suit also seeks monetary damages...

Thanks for posting that - and I wish him well in his law suit.

The fact he was arrested for "suspicion of lewd conduct" is ridiculous in this day and age. Had they walked in and found him in the act would be one thing (although places like ABS and adult theaters even that should not be grounds) but just "suspicion" is absurd.

I'm curious if there's ever been a class-action lawsuit of this kind before. If so, what happened? If not, this is truly unprecedented.

Although I'm awfully pressed for time I hope I can look this up later.

I want to add now that the same lawyer will be filing a class-action lawsuit in connection with arrests at San Jose's Columbus Park. The story was in San Jose Inside.

It's a long story, so I'm attaching a PDF of that along with one of the June Mercury-News story about dismissal of the cases against 19 (!!!) men.

I see a lot of local news stories about gay, bi, or other "men-seeking-men" -- whatever they're called -- being arrested with their names and photos, sometimes even more info, from web sites for newspapers, local TV, or both. They're from a Google News alert I use to help identify places to update in the Sex Listings.

Whatever you make of it, this story popped up last week about a straight couple detained for having sex, naked in a car by the side of the road, in East Manchester Township near York, Pennsylvania. Only the woman was arrested; she had an outstanding unrelated warrant.

And as the story says, "they, too, shall remain nameless."

What the hell, I'll just attach a PDF of that one, too.

I am glad for these men that the case was tossed out...

But the fact the news reported names / photos of the people arrested they have already had their lives harmed by the arrest.
