You will get wet. They will throw water at you whether your in a taxi or on the back of a motorbike or walking anywhere. They will throw water from a window or curb side or from the bed of a truck. Kids will buy powerful water guns and these can be filled with many different liquids. I guess if your out and about the best thing to do is not dress too nicely and protect cameras and other valuables from getting wet. Me I hate getting water thrown on me so I will find a hotel with a good view of the streets and just watch the action. Usually you are safe going about after 8 in the evenings but even then theres a chace to get wet.

My experiences might appear to contradict an earlier posting in that during the usual 'Business hours.' a certain sense prevails; but after 18hrs., and particularly in places like Si Lom 4 all h*ll will break loose with no quarter being asked or given!
My advice - do NOT ride a m/cycle. unless you're willing to be involved in a potential accident: buckets of water can and will be thrown straight at the driver - if you have to travel then go in an enclosed & water-proof vehicle. Condoms are useful for keeping dry one's cell-'phone.. If you decide to participate then do NOT take-out any valuables with you and wear your oldest & preferably quick drying clothes. 'bye. |

Yes, a lot of boys do return home as Sonkran is a major family time....but many more will flood into BKK, Pattaya etc to enjoy the fun.......if you've never experienced it, you should do it (once!) just for the experience........it can be a great way to hook up too, and not just with the usual steet walkers! You may meet some real thai guys!

Songkran can be a blast if you are prepared for the deluge of water that always happens. If you approach it with the right mindset and participate in the fun, then you'll love it. But if you are squeemish about getting water (or that nasty powder) thrown on you, better stay indoors, or far away from it all.
And what I'll say about the water times will contradict yet another post: from what I've observed, most water play occurs during the day and by nightfall are usually safe and dry. BUT...there are exceptions to that rule, such as in some tourist and bar ghettos (Khao San Road, Nana Plaza) and water shenanigans in and around Silom that someone else noted. Anywhere in Pattaya also seems to be "round the clock". In fact, if you don't want to get wet you might want to avoid Pattaya altogether. Not only do they observe the "official" Songkran days from April 13-15, but they extend their celebrations until the 19th or 20th. And I read last week that Chiang Mai will start their Songkran water throwing earlier this year, on April 1. Some sort of April Fool's Day joke? Unfortunately not. The "logic" is that by throwing more water around town it will help lessen the current problem they are having with smoke and haze in the area. |

I've been here for too many SongKran's - would like to avoid most of it if I can and am thinking of going to Pattaya for five or six days rather than just stay in my home in BKK. Is it true, they celebrate the following week down there and you can enjoy a more or less dry time in Pattaya while BKK is soaking?

Ah, Songkran! The time that people are forced to house arrest if they don't like to participate in the 'fun'. People who carry laptops, mobile phones or cameras are 'may sanook'.
Also known as the annual culling season of not too bright Thais. Expect at least 700 people to die due to the 'festivities'. |

An announcement in today's, (wed.), 'BKK. Post.' from the Dep. PM. for Social Affairs is that this year Songkran will run from 13th. to 17th. april inclusive, (5 days.), so as to give everyone a full opportunity to enjoy the festivities.
Employers have been advised to heed the fact that mon. & tue. will be holidays and that those working on those days must be paid their due salaries/wages, or else they will face fines etc.. 'bye.. |

Making a couple of checks along Suriwong rd. for the Songkran holiday:
1.- Expect banks to stay CLOSED from inclusive 13-16 apr.; 2.- Expect POs. to stay CLOSED from inclusive 13-17 apr.; however the Main PO. on Charoen Krung should be OPEN during the forenoons and the nearby Int'l. 'phone. Facility should stay OPEN 24/7.. E&OE.. 'bye.. |

Today, here in BKK., is the 1st. day of Songkran, wch. this yr. will last until next tuesday, 17th. - although, possibly by that time, even the most determined merry-makers and party-goers will have had enough?
The Comfort Rooms in Silom Complex Shopping Plaza have been occupied by mostly young people washing-off the watered-down talcum- powder from their faces and cleaning themselves up in gen'l. in prep'n. for more water-fights and so on. At approx. 19hrs. this evening the Rama IV. end of Si Lom rd. had been more or less taken-over by the walking revellers - seldom seen so many bits & pieces of eye-candy walking abroad: their wet tee-shirts and shorts can be quite eye-catching! For those wishing to avoid too much of the water along Si Lom rd. it's better to walk on the non-Phat Pong side of that rd.. I saw that Phat Pong I's. night mkt. was CLOSED - no stalls set-out; not too many road-side stalls in Si Lom or S'wong. rds. either. People gen'lly. good natured about the whole thing - it does NOT pay to get up-tight. "Sanook." as one says here. 'bye.. |
