I tried Adonis for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Boy I chose (can not remember name) seemed into nothing other than a hand job. I asked what the difference was then between Adonis and the other Silom massage places. Anyone been to Body Club recently? Have been going on and off since it opened. Went soon after New Year and very few boys and Mamasan not that helpful and non of the boys I had had in the past there. Boy I took not that good. Thinking it was due to the New Year I went two days ago and only about 10 boys working again and no-one I recognised. hcmpp - I assume you are you referring to the Body Club on Sukhumvit Soi 8 in Bangkok (and not the unrelated one in Pattaya).

I have been going fairly regularly, perhaps once every 2 months or so. The massage quality at Body Club has never been consistent; much depends on the boy. This is unlike the skills found at Candle T Spa, for example. So I think nothing of it if on one visit I get unremarkable massage service, so long as the "aftersales service" is satisfactory.

What I have liked about Body Club has been the type of boys they had on offer.

My most recent visit was 2 weeks ago, and something unusual happened which i didn't think was a good sign. When I arrived, the mamasan was missing. The boys said he had just stepped out. Nonetheless, one of the boys took charge and the administrative prelimaries were settled without difficulty. There were about 15 boys in the line-up which didn't strike me as unusual. It has generally varied from say, 12 to 24.

When I finished and came down (about 6 or 7 pm), again I didn't see anyone behind the counter. Was the mamasan not back yet? I stood there waiting to pay and nobody seemed in charge. In fact, there was nobody in the main lobby. My masseur was making a cup of tea at the back and the other boys - goodness knows where they were.

When my guy appeared with a cup of tea, I asked him, "So, do I pay you?" which I knew from previous visits would not be the custom. There would usually be a cashier or the mamasan himself behind the counter.

The boy said "no", handed me the tea and swung around to a heap on the couch covered with a blanket and shook it. And lo! there awoke the mamasan. Perhaps he was ill that day. But if he wasn't, I thought, he would be setting a very bad example for his staff. Once discipline gets out of control, service standards would be very hard to maintain.

And yes, despite many visits to Body Club, I have never seen the same guy twice, not even in the line up. So there may be something in your observation that they cannot retain staff.

So, I've got a question for the group....

When I go to get a legitimate (non-sexual) massage, what is the customary tip? I know that it should be no where near what I give a guy who ploughs me, but what's fair? And, would such a tip be higher in touristy places like Silom than they would be at my neighbourhood massage place?

The only places I have been to for non-sexual massage have been those along Silom Road and up Rama 4 Road (Sanctuary and Candle-T-Spa). I don't think I have any experience with "neighbourhood" places. Where nothing sexual occurred, I normally tip 100 - 500 baht purely depending on the quality of the massage (and I know a fair bit about massage techniques to be able to tell the difference).

I usually go to those places on Soi Wall Street Inn (off Suriwong, opposite the Montien Hotel) - they all charge pretty much a standard 350 baht for a two-hour Thai massage. From a boy who worked in one of them (and who know works at Apsara) I can report that the masseurs get a salary of 1500 baht per 10 days - so about 4500/month. That's round about what anyone in the lowest rank of the Thai work force gets. The reception in one of them has a reasonably large notice near the till that says "No tip is expected; please report if you are asked for a tip". I usually hand over 500 baht to the receptionist, and tip the masseur the balance at the end.

It would be a trek from nearest BTS - would need a taxi. If you come onto Sathorn from Soi Convent, Soi Suan Phlu is across the road on left - Baan Kanitha (sp) is on the corner. It is then some way down on LHS (you do not seem to pass sois 2 and 4 before you get to 6) and then on the sub soi it is on the RHS very clearly signed.
