I agree this has turned into an interesting thread, keep posting
I was very interested to read the comments from Maximus, who is able to comment from an industry point of view. I also liked his comment about the time spent by visitors and the number of different visitors guests have. From comments I have had made to me though it would appear that a number of hotels request that staff do not visit guests in their rooms when they are off duty. This is the case in cities other than Bangkok also. A friend of mine used to work at the Oriental Hotel in Singapore and could not visit my room when I stayed there. In regard to Bangkok hotels I think in many cases its a case of whether the staff recognise you, and how you treat them. Many also like to check visitors ID for security purposes, and in general I cannot disagree with this. I do notice in some hotels that staff make a habit of talking in Thai to your Thai friends, if I feel this may cause a problem I pre advise my Thai friends to tell hotel staff to direct any questions to me in English. I have visited the Peninsula Hotel on many occasions and find it a great place to be, with excellent rooms, though I have yet to stay there. However the Oriental is not on my list as my Thai boyfriend does not like going near the place. When he was in the tourist business he had to go to the Oriental a number of times, and was always treated like a second class citizen. Sometimes he would phone the hotel to speak to a guest; when he spoke in Thai, he was not put through to the guest, if he spoke in English he was. I wonder how guests get through the lobby when they want to go out in shorts. [ November 23, 2001: Message edited by: rick253 ] |

once registered guests can pretty much come and go as they like...absolutely no staff off duty at any major hotel copany are allowed back into the hotel off duty..subject to discipline...I have also encountered the orientals dress code and wondered about it...common sense rules..the staff have a job to do ..off duty have fun on duty they risk a lot..

what an amusing thread. I can only comment based on my personal experience. During a recent visit to BKK I stayed at the Oriental to attend the Oriental cooking school. While there I had numerous local guests without any hint of problem. Likewise at Raffles in Singapore. Although I expected to be hassled about guests, this never occured. and in both places I was welcomed in short pants - even in the evening. The idea of being turned away at the door is unimaginable based on my experiences.

The Oriental only bars entry to non-guests wearing shorts. It allows its own guests come in and out wearing shorts, but discourages them from hanging around in the public areas in them.
As far as guests in rooms goes, I guess you were just lucky. A good friend of mine works at the Oriental and confirms that the "no sex workers in the rooms" rule is strictly enforced. |

No, of course not. Depends on the time of day, how your companion looks, and how he/she is dressed. Obviously, they are not going to say anything if you walk in the front door at 3:00 in the afternoon with a guy who looks like the president of Bangkok Bank. But if you waltz in at 2:00 with a twenty-year old kid with spiked hair and wearing a sleeveless t-shirt, you will be pounced upon.

I have often wondered which hotels best combine luxury and accessibility for Thai boys. I want to stay in a very nice hotel when vacationing in BKK, but fear not being able to bring local guests. The Oriental, etc. are out of the question in this regard. Can anyone confirm no hassel at the Sukhothai? Thanks so much.
